I would maybe recommend submitting the ones that have no HUD. However even then the models are fairly simple and will be judged by the contributors in private voting. I can't tell much as I'm not the only one voting.

It would fit well within the group's gallery if the image was not vertically distorted. Also, I've read the description of the same carbine and you stated it was not yet finished.
At least that's my personal opinion and why I voted to decline. Would be nice to hear an opinion from other voters too
However, do NOT let this get you down, improve it a bit and it will definitely get accepted

If I remember correctly, you were posting it to the "Featured" gallery, right? Personally I didn't find the presentation good enough, but the model is actually nicely done. If you were to submit it to the "Characters" folder it would go through without a problem.
I hope this helps

I just have a quick question. Why was my piece here declined: [link] ? I did model the plane for the water in zbrush before porting it to maya and I modeled the rocks in maya. I was thinking though maybe it was the heavy use of dynamics ? the rain, clouds and the material default for the water? I guess those might count as generated?

xQUATROx In reply to CylindricalFawn [2011-08-08 16:41:15 +0000 UTC]
To be honest, this scene can be generated really fast inside, say, 3Ds MAX (add a plane, model the base huge waves, subdivide, add a noise modifier, subdivide again, add one more noise, then add materials).
This is not really something that's hard to do, if you catch my drift
The post work has almost no impact on our decisions as this is a MODELLING group and we look at the model and it's complexity and then the presentation.
I hope you have found this useful

Magmabolt In reply to HAL001 [2011-08-03 16:30:30 +0000 UTC]
My problem with it was that I couldn't tell what was going on in the scene. It looks like his spaceship wont turn on so he has to hitchhike somewhere, and that's really all I can gather. Posing a character is extremely important. If the viewer can't tell what is going on, they wont give it a second look.
My other problems are the overall quality of the image. The character doesn't appear to have a shadow or the ground is way too bright for it to show up. I would suggest lowering the brightness on its texture, change up where the shadows are being emitted from, and give it a nice ambient occlusion for it to really pop out .
As for models, there's a lot of objects in the background that are showing a lot of tessellation (the wheel thing on the left and the fins on the ship)and they need to be smoothed out. Also those box shaped items need to be beveled a lot, they are way too sharp and crisp, beveling makes it look less like it was CGed.
Hope this helps and I cant wait to see revisions

HAL001 In reply to Magmabolt [2011-08-05 08:19:13 +0000 UTC]
Now I see your point and it seems that there is a complete misunderstanding on the purpose of this picture
For me this picture was just a test render of the main caracter in order to see if the rigging, my morphs and the shaders work. The background is a stock model I put there just for fun and to see if my shader work with something else than a neutral background.
I use my favourite hdri map, put a spot light and hit the "render" button (it is even possible that I forgot to check if ambiant occlusion is on...) there's no postwork, no color correction, etc...
Then I saw that I still have a lot of work
I was more looking for criticism and advice on the modelling, skinning, etc of the main character than anything else because for me it is not really an artistic render. But I see now that it was not self explanatory. Maybe I should have put it in the WIP section.

Athey In reply to Timaman [2011-06-22 22:10:32 +0000 UTC]
I don't know which specific deviation you're referring to, but from a quick glance at your gallery, I would say that the most likely reason for anything you've got there being declined would be amateur presentation. There's nothing specifically wrong with the geometry, it's just the textures/lighting/render that falls short of the mark. We try to keep a fairly high standard here. I'm sure some would argue that it's elitist or something, but the fact is that the group is for the watcher more than the submitter - An easy and direct way to view a wide variety of high quality 3D art on DA.
When I'm a member/watcher of a group that accepts anything and everything that gets submitted, it ends up meaning that my dev watch gets filled with crap art that I wouldn't normally want to look at from artists I would never add to my dev watch. To avoid such a thing, we try to keep the level of quality at a near-pro level. Work on your presentation and submit again, because there's nothing specifically wrong with your geo.

I have to agree with Athey. Your work needs polishing, better textures, and lighting. Work with people instead of against them. It's a critique, you need to have an open mind to it.

This is a small promotion for the challenge I'm running in the 3DJam forum over on CGHub. -"The Immortal Iron Fist"-
Iron Fist is a great character for 3D Artists to sculpt, especially for portfolio development work, because Iron Fist is a somewhat recognizable character, but not one that's been sculpted a billion times already. The advantage of this kind of character is that the association with the Marvel character may be there, but the prospective employer will be looking at and evaluating YOUR WORK, not immediately drawing comparisons between your sculpt and countless other ones that have been done already. ("Batman", "Wolverine" etc.)
Check it out! Just go to CGHub -] Forum-] Challenges -] 3D Jam

You guys rejected one of my best pieces. I've read the whole 'on the fence thing', but this group is starting to turn into some sort of special elitist club. I spent ages modelling and rendering that

Magmabolt In reply to Timaman [2011-04-25 14:59:10 +0000 UTC]
sorry man but that's kinda the nature of the business. We aren't trying to pick on people but the standard is very high, especially for modelers. That's why there's so many critiquing clubs that are there to make you improve your skills. I have many projects that I was pretty proud of that now, looking back, I can't believe I would make something like that and put it on the internet for everyone to see .
But after a lot of practice and LOTS of people telling me my work is crap, I'm now able to make work that's more up to par with people in the industry. Don' get me wrong though, I have my share of bad work that doesn't get submitted either.
I guess I'm trying to say, don't let a no vote get you down, ask why it wasn't submitted and we'll be happy to give you a critique so you can make it better. hope that helps
