i do not quite understand what you mean by drawing whatever real life looks like instead of whatever feels right. do you mind elaborating a little of what you mean for me please?

ya, it's kinda hard to explain, but basically just trust your eyes. One thing I like doing with color pencil is using all the colors I see even though it's a little counter-intuitive; so for example, the green part of the plant has yellow, blue, purple, red, brown, etc., and it does not show green at all until the last couple of coatings. It's just something I thought was pretty cool.
As for more formal drawing guidelines, my art teacher once told us to never use black in drawing, and have 5-7+ layers for color pencil drawings. It's weird, but it's good advice. ^ ^
