The main focus is smilies. Though it depends on what other type of emoticons you are referring to.

Hmmmm... I've just made my own emoticons that are based on a certain game. I thought about sharing them with a group about emoticons.
Though, my "emoticons" are pretty much just little animated icons. I don't think they'd be relevant within the community.

I think they'd more likely be classed as pixel art sprites rather than emotes

Those are HD emoticons, and not pixel art. You pretty much just need to learn how to animate.

Okay, so I'm new to creating emoticons and I made several but when I uploaded them I didn't include the colon at each end. Does editing the title afterwards not work to get it to show up by typing it instead of using the add media? They function fine via searches but being able to type them in the same way one types familiar emoticons like

The emotes with colons are related to the old emote system called the emoticon legend. Previously these were the only emotes you could use in comments, and each had its own special code.
Since the add media feature was developed, dA has stopped updating this list (apart from the odd official emoticon like a new dA logo). So they only way to use new emotes is the add media feature. The old ones continue to work just because I think people would be upset if dA changed that system. So sadly adding colons to the name won't make any difference.

What do you mean specifically?
If you put your emoticon in the Emote Gallery, it can be used by others with the "Add Media" function.

And you don't have to make an emote before you join the group - we accept anyone that is interested in emotes.
