Really I just thing the plot isn't the right kind to be taken seriously. Usually there isn't much plot at all to racing games and when there is, it has to be twisted so every single conflict is started by "HEY, LET'S RACE"
...but then again I'm a dork who writes fanfics all the time.

Well, I've seen some movies who had plots based around racing actually work well, so I don't think it's a matter of taking the plot seriously as much as it is to not realize one is there.

Well yeah they can actually write action scenes where something is decided by...well...not a race. You can't exactly have a racing game go to long into cutscenes or else the player just gets tired of waiting. Kind of a different beast entirely here.
