Hmm, Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell is moeilijk te beschrijven. De awesomeheid is niet echt in 100 woordjes te vatten. Dit staat er op de flap:

English magicians were once the wonder of the known world, with fairy servants at their beck and call; they could command winds, mountains, and woods. But by the early 1800s they have long since lost the ability to perform magic. They can only write long, dull papers about it, while fairy servants are nothing but a fading memory.

But at Hurtfew Abbey in Yorkshire, the rich, reclusive Mr Norrell has assembled a wonderful library of lost and forgotten books from England's magical past and regained some of the powers of England's magicians. He goes to London and raises a beautiful young woman from the dead. Soon he is lending his help to the government in the war against Napoleon Bonaparte, creating ghostly fleets of rain-ships to confuse and alarm the French.

All goes well until a rival magician appears. Jonathan Strange is handsome, charming, and talkative-the very opposite of Mr Norrell. Strange thinks nothing of enduring the rigors of campaigning with Wellington's army and doing magic on battlefields. Astonished to find another practicing magician, Mr Norrell accepts Strange as a pupil. But it soon becomes clear that their ideas of what English magic ought to be are very different. For Mr Norrell, their power is something to be cautiously controlled, while Jonathan Strange will always be attracted to the wildest, most perilous forms of magic. He becomes fascinated by the ancient, shadowy figure of the Raven King, a child taken by fairies who became king of both England and Faerie, and the most legendary magician of all. Eventually Strange's heedless pursuit of long-forgotten magic threatens to destroy not only his partnership with Norrell, but everything that he holds dear.

Het is 'Harry Potter for adults' genoemd, waar ik het niet mee eens ben, en de schrijfstijl wordt vergeleken met Austen en Dickens, waar ik het wél mee eens ben. Zeker met Austen (er zit zo veel van haar ironische humor in). Anyway. Het is een dik boek over twee tovenaars dat zich afspeelt in het begin van de 19de eeuw. Het zit vol voetnoten, waarin verwijzingen naar gebeurtenissen in de magische geschiedenis en naar fictionele boeken staan en waarin soms hele sprookjes verteld worden. Het hele boek is geschreven in een 19de-eeuwse stijl (met oude spelling enzo! En het komt nog volledig geloofwaardig over ook.) en het is zo geweldig Brits. Het enige wat ik eigenlijk wil zeggen is dat het simply delightful is.

Ik zou tegen iedereen zeggen dat ze het moeten lezen, maar het jammere is dat ik ook vaak genoeg hoor dat mensen niet verder dan hoofdstuk 3 konden komen. Tsk. ^^

I've seen some of those in real life... at Waterstone's, I believe. They're really cool, but their colours are much brighter than in those pictures and, well, it makes some (the Alice in Wonderland one, for example)them look a bit TOO colourful. I really like the King Arthur and Peter Pan editions, though. And the Jules Verne novels. But you can't buy them because of your vegetarianism thingie? That just sucks.

Now we're talking covers anyway, have you seen the new Penguin Threads covers? They're embroidered (well, of course the embroidery is printed, but still, if you go over it with your fingers you can feel it) and they look so awesome. Take Little Women for example:

I really love them! If it was of books I found more important I might buy them.. Not the Emma one though, I find Emma damn foolish really so I don't want a cover reminding me of a foolish girl really.. And this one kinda does - eventhough its pretty. Hihi - I'm mean I know..

Ik heb IEDERE VRIJDAG les bij jou. Dude! Eigenlijk baal ik er ook een beetje van, want ik moet dan dus echt veel eerder zijn om de bus te halen enz. En ook moet ik weer met strippenkaarten gaan klooien, beh. Maar verder is het natuurlijk wel cool! Het probleem is alleen wel dat ik er les heb van 11:00-12:45 en dat ik meteen om 13:15 alweer college heb in de binnenstad. Ik bedenk me nu trouwens wel dat dat om 15:00 afgelopen is en dat ik dan maybe ook met de trein terug zou kunnen gaan (maar ik weet niet welke tijd jullie zouden afspreken, dus...).
