I haven't been able to turn anything for months. My lathe is in my dad's basement and my brother and his wife/kids moved in so I couldn't make any noise for fear of waking the young ones up. I helped them move last weekend and was hoping to get back to work. Alas, I broke my drive pulley yesterday and now I have to hunt down a new one Arrrghh!

Not a good day for wood.

Yesterday morning, I tried to paint a basswood tiki I have been working on for two years. It is a commission piece. I ruined it when I first put a brush to it. The paint ran and got all blotchy from the get go. And then I started picking up a red blush all over it and I did not even have any red paint out. I have reread all the books I have with anything on how to paint carvings and I do not what I did wrong.

I needed it done by Saturday so I let it dry and try to sand it off to no avail. So I tried to carve it off and got the lips so thin they broke. I spent much of the night last night reworking the mouth and got it to look okay (but only just okay).

The thing had deep (and I do mean deep) scales and ridges along both sides and the back of its head. When I got one of these so thin that I broke it off I realized that the paint has followed the grain all the way through the ridges.

This was very possibly the best carving I have ever done (if not the best then the most detailed) and now it is nothing but trash. I do not think I can even salvage the remaining wood for something else. On top of this I can not afford another piece of wood to start over. Even if I thought I had strength right now to start over.

I am sorry to say that I sat down and cried for 4 soul crushing, agonizing hours. Then I went to work and struggled through the rest of the day. I found myself just randomly crying at work and was ask what was irritating my eyes so much by several coworkers. I could not focus on things. My director yelled and screamed at me for things I did not do and/or did not have any control over. He is treating to quite and I do not want his job.

This morning I climbed up into the attic to check on 6 drums blanks I had up there curing and all 6 of them have deep cracks and can no longer be used for drums. I do not know what I am doing wrong or what to do differently.

I did not kill myself nor will I but I am feeling very crushed and defeated just now, hell of a way to start the year. And now I get to go back to work and explain to my friend why she does not have a carving.

Any thoughts

Got any advice on how to keep log from cracking?

I am trying to green carve a large drum and I can not seem to get beyond skinning the bark off.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

method2madness In reply to bear48 [2010-11-22 05:01:42 +0000 UTC]

Boy, that's a tough one. The logs I use for turning will check almost immediately without Anchorseal. Even then they usually check slightly after a few days. However, the wood I use is extremely green whereas Texas trees are probably a bit drier. Since most checks start at the pith and spread out I almost wonder if you could use a very large (and long) drill bit and try to core out the pith before it can start to check. You'd need one hell of a powerful drill though. No idea if it would work..just thought of it right now. In theory you could test it with a smaller log/drill. Good luck at any rate!

Grats! There still could be some radial checking but I hope it doesn't reach the perimeter. My guess is that if you carve/turn it ASAP it just might work...and if it does I'm sure it will sound sweet!
