Thanks happy new year,
Yeah the whites on the side do bother me, I had to use a uniform exposure when shooting the panorama which meant that part of the photo got blown out, I'll have to toy with it. Maybe another 5 hour drive to get it at twilight.
Hope all is well

I hate leaving generic messages on user pages, but itβs a hard habit to break β and since Iβm writing to so many people there really is no other way to go about it. Sorry if this all seems redundant, Iβll do my best to make this letter as warm and personal as possible.
The year is drawing to a close; so much has happened over the past twelve months in my life, and in some respects Iβm still trying to make sense of it all! DeviantArt has played a major part in my life over the past year β it has shaped me as a person more than University ever has β and I have all of you to thank for that.
During high school my father handed me a leather bag β I didnβt know what the contents were. When I opened it up I found to my delight an old Pentax 35mm with an assortment of lenses. I was thrilled. I had never tried my hand at photography before but immediately went out to the nearest store, picked up some film and joined the school newspaper. A week later I got my first rolls of film back β all underexposed and ruined. I had failed miserably and put the camera away in my closet.
In early 2003 I took a trip to Quebec City for the Winter Carnival β and I took the camera with me. In April of that year a good friend from High School introduced me to DeviantArt. I submitted some of my photos from the trip (that were not underexposed β hurrah!) and a handful of pencil drawings of Totoro. It didnβt take long for me to become hooked and soon I was taking pictures again and learning from other photographers. That summer I bought my first digital camera, and I havenβt looked back since.
As of this moment I have been taking on small commercial jobs, doing commission work and creating a portfolio that I will take to local galleries in early 2005. I have started to sell prints both online and offline, and I have started to think of photography as a serious profession down the road. Perhaps it will be as a photojournalist, perhaps as a researcher β maybe simply as an artist trying to capture the beauty around me. In the course of just over a year photography has become my one true passion β I canβt put the camera down, and I canβt stop flipping through books, magazine articles, collections etc. It truly is addictive, and it changes the way I view the world around me.
I owe this tremendous change in my life to all of you. Since the very beginning you guys have been incredibly supportive, and incredibly inspirational. The amount of constructive feedback that I have received is overwhelming to say the very least. The other rich aspect of this community is the ability to see what others see β I have enjoyed viewing your work since joining β there have been some very moving / thought provoking / gorgeous imagery produced. This artistic community is a blessing for those starting out as an artist, or for those who simply want to share or observe work.
I donβt want this community experience to end anytime soon β I hope to remain an active member of the site and play as much of a part in your lives as you have played in mine. Sometimes I do get busy with school etc, but donβt ever feel that Iβm ignoring you! Leave a message; kick me from time to time (even a slap to the face will do). I say this from time to time, but Iβll say it again here β if you ever want feedback on your work just let me know β I really donβt mind stopping by to comment / offer input! It is always nice to see what other people are using their imagination and creativity to produce.
Regardless of what your background is, I hope that you find the time over the next couple of weeks to relax and sneak away from the hectic pace of life - enjoy the company of family & friends! All the best to you in 2005
Cheers,
Evan

I don't know what I did for you to find me, but I'm sure glad you did. Your detailed, honest, and thought provoking comments are more valued to me then the ever elusive DTF or DD many people here are out to get.
As for the photo itself, no, I didn't use my wide angle or anything, just the furthest zoomed out that my G3 will do. But yes, the camera was _almost_ pointed straight up to capture the photo. About the breaks in the trees in the lower half of the photo. As you suggested, I played around in photoshop burning the highlights of that lower corner. It does have an interesting effect of putting more emphases on the totem itself, but I'm not sure if I'll change it. Thanks for pointing that out, I'll be sitting here at photoshop for the next half hour going "ok... burn... original... burned... original..."
Anyway, thanks for the comment and the fav

Hello again!
Thanks for yet another great comment! You brought up some good ideas.
Stopping down would have helped out a lot. I just figured out how to use the macro feature in full manual mode - so hopefully in the future I'll have a little more control over what I'm shooting. It would definately increase the sharpness and reduce some of that stray light.
Never thought about using my hand or someone else to block the light - such a simple concept yet perhaps the most effective in a situation like that
Thanks again! I'll get around to commenting on your recent piece soon!
Enjoy the weekend,
evan

Hello
Thank you so much for your input on A Dream For Sale . I really appreciate you commenting on my work.
To answer your question, it was captured with a digital camera. I did enhance the colours a little bit. If I remember correctly, I increased the yellow a tad bit.
Thanks again and take care

Hello!
How can I not visit your gallery after you left such a wonderful comment on my work?
I enjoy the diversity of your work - from day to night, black and white to colour - there is a wide range of subjects and styles which is nice to see. Too often people restrict themselves and never explore. Also nice to see you putting the old camera to good use! I can relate - I've got an old pentax that is going on 40 years - I feel the exact same way about it.
I don't have the time to comment now - but if there is ever something you want me to comment on let me know! PLEASE! I do not mind and would be more than willing
Take care and enjoy your weekend!
evan

Thanks so much for the comment on the the Think Outside the Box shot!
Just so you know, the word Think is printed twice and then photographed, the big Think was not added later.
I was playing around a little with it to get that shot and may do some more work with it later as well based on your suggestions.

Just so you know, the Darlington Ice shot was set up a little before I took the shot, (just had to come clean on it).
My wife found the stick on the shore frozen against some rocks and I had her hold it up to shoot it against Lake Ontario. So technically the ice formed that way, but not in a veritical position ( a little preprocessing on my part before I took the shot).
It was late afternoon and the light was magical, it was such a good day! I love it when all the elements come together or when I recognize that they have all come together.

Thanks for your comment on Sealing Cove and all the kind words. It's every photographers goal I believe is to share a piece of themselves that will impact the viewer. You've just justified all of those many late nights freezing my ass off wondering around on this island. Thank you for all the kind words on my unworthy photo. I'm gonna have to remember your nerf ball line

I don't even think my camera takes filters... I just upped the contrast a little in PS...
Also, with the panorama of the chinese gardens... yeah, you're probly right, as I can't control the exposure of my shots... the only thing I can do is change the ISO - which I always leave on 50.
Thanks for your comments!

Thank you again and again and again and again. Your comments are always right on. I did not notice the yellow cast to the classic shot until after I had posted it. It was a regular incandescent desk lamp (hotel desks...) so that is probably where the yellow is coming from. I have a couple more shots of the ice to post but I will make sure they are colour corrected first.

Thanks for commenting so fully on my " East Coast Sunset" picture. I didn't think to make it like a side picture cause I was so into getting the right pose and the right shadow etc. Thanks for giving me the idea though.
I've already started making him a picture book. He loves to have his picture taken.
Thanks again.

Thanks so much for stopping by and having a look at the "Into the Woods" shot.
I just could not resist a shot of this one, another path in my life that offers both risk and reward. The bridge was safe and the water was only knee deep, so not to worry.
I know the sky kind of sucked in it, but from now until March, we get that non-descript kind of sky 5 out of every 7 days or so.

and the horizon was purposely shot at that angle because that how it actually is. I'll probably play around more with shots similar to this one in the near future.
