This is one of the main villains in "The Hellhound" comic.

Malachi an abyssworlder who was a proud, honoured guardian of the barrier and keeper of the key to hellsgate failed in his duty his mind and will faltered, he was influenced by a maddening dark deity bent on being freed from its eternal prison in the void.

Malachi released all the demons from hell into earth thus weakening the barrier, for his betrayal to his people he was sentenced to a fate worse than death destroying his physical form in such a way he would exist only as a wraith like being unable to keep solid form for long thought that he would eventually fade into nothingness.
