Description Bonjour here. I am here to tell that long ago, right at the beginning of my DeviantArt career I have made a Distrust Difficult Mode Sans sprite. Now, I have decided to resprite the whole thing as a big pixelart this time, as now there is much more content present for the AU: the lore elements, main acting characters on the stage, sprites and some sprite animations like the dodging ones along with me presenting a conceptual sprite for phase two that is not going to be shown here. And one more thing: River Person's design used here is not canon (so far I haven't seen an actual canon design for River Person in Underswap) since Kate wants to pay some tribute to the previous owner Luxent and use her sprite. Also, some more about River Person here: they are not going to affect the in-game processes whatsoever and just going to appear in the credits, a special role, is it not?

Now, let me tell you some renewals featured in the AU. To begin with, the AU now is owned by my friend Kate, whom you also know as KT or Keane on DeviantArt and it is her who is introducing all this original stuff in there. So what are the changes exactly? Here they are: the AU is not going to be just a Disbelief reskin anymore and there will not be five phases, not even four, but two, and to be more precise, the latter would have a sort of a "final struggle" part where Sans tries put his backbone into the last effort to smash us flat. No magical revivals of Papyrus and Alphys by Gaster or River Person taking place. Just Sans and that is it... Well, not really. Have you forgotten it is the DIFFICULT mode? Right. And we still have one more foe standing after Sans: queen Toriel who is to be fought against as well. The punisher.

What is each phase like and what are the differences from the original? Here we go. I am telling you all the information available to me about each of the phases.

Phase number one.

Before phase one you encounter Sans in the Final Corridor where he tells you how many unforgivable crimes you have done. His manner of speech changes, excitement and energy all vanish completely from his once overjoyed face, leaving place only to HATRED. HE LOATHES YOU NOW. You are not going to evade your fate and are about to pay for everything you have ever done to monsters with your corpse and soul and no money or prayer would save you from your ultimate demise.

Once we enter the battle Sans would start throwing notably harder variant of his attacks he has in Underswap (originally, in Underswap his attacks are appear somewhat fast and repetitive to tire the human, like in UT, while Papyrus has his attacks rather smartly made and fancily constructed, again, similarly to Undertale) and obviously would apply his large bone on you, either smacking you with it or using it as a longer-term in-battle-box attack with changing its colour to blue in moments (as we have never seen Skelebros using orange attacks in Undertale, nor Underswap has them in use... Not even Papyrus). Cannot say anything about the Gaster Blasters as Distrust Difficult Mode is an actual alternate timeline of Underswap (Canonical Underswap) and I don't know whether Sans uses Blasters in there or it is an only-Papyrus ability there. Sure, we can remember the moment when Papyrus in Undertale tells us about a special attack that could have blasted Frisk off, which is possibly Blasters, but Underswap is Underswap and sadly not all things that are in Undertale are followed there, so we still can only make guesses about it. As for in-game dialogue, Sans is going to mention your sins sometimes, but would not pay much attention to this as to the battle... And do not even expect for mercy at this stage from him: he will just reject it during the battle: here it is either do or die. Acts are not likely to help either with Sans having somewhat short and distracted answers for he knows these are merely just some pesky attempts to make him drop his guards, last thing he has to do. In the end, he no longer has no feelings left for you, as it has been stated in the beginning.

Phase number two.

Phase two now what is being thought over, but in overall the transitional scene would happen after Sans would get tired fighting you and stop to catch some breath. During this moment there are several options you can choose: you can spare Sans only to be rejected again, you can act to distract him and then hit him and finally you can hit him directly right after he gets tired... Additionally, I offered an easteregg option that could happen if you don't do anything for a long period of time: Sans would sit down, putting his bone vertically to still block your hit and would take out a taco from behind his back to have a small snack to restore some energy. This would also be the moment for you to his Sans. At the current moment it has not been decided whether his bone will break, since Sans can not only block hits, but can also dodge, which, of course, reduces the amount of damage delivered to the bone... But we do not have to forget that Sans' attack and defence power is still as weak as in Undertale, so noone has the right to cancel the probability of the bone breaking. Now, back to the topic, once you hit Sans who was distracted at the moment, he would initially just stand still, shocked, not understanding, how he could almost let the human hit him. After realising what has actually happened, he would get angry at himself that he let such a horrible flaw that almost cost him life and thus the rage phase would start. As we all know, in rage, people, if are fighting, often miss due to wasting power without any concentration on their target. Here, Sans is not only entering the rage mode, but also is still tired, as he had not enough time to start the battle anew at full power, making the phase just "rage-fueled" and nothing more than an attempt of a badly thought-over "blitzkrieg". But even though Sans does not concentrate, that does not make his attacks weaker: they are now EVEN FASTER. Oh yes, and do not forget about Karmic Retribution that is going to be present throughout two phases and would play a KEY role during the second one, aiding the maddened skeleton, as in Underswap KR is still SANS' thing. Also, I have to make another notable mention about his appearance in the second phase: he is to have the blue flaming aura incoming from his body, as it was initially right from the first phase - now this again, pretty much shows just nothing more than an emphasis for Sans' rage state, as well as the tribute to the original DDM. Also, I would like for the aura to change its brightness over time, marking how much rage is still within the skeleton. Close to the end, in my opinion, it would dim completely... When suddenly...

The final chance at finishing the human is at hand and Sans uses his internal resources to give out an ending blow that is to be short, though intense... Afterwards... He would just fall weakened on the ground, waiting for his death, hopeless... But to ensure himself that his death would be the most DIFFICULT thing for human to achieve, Sans just leaves you inside the box and this is where the most interesting moment comes: you have a choice to either finish him or spare him. Should you stab Sans, he will just accept his death, knowing that at least he has tried. In case you offer him mercy, Sans would just flee from the battle field, in desperation stating you have done this just to make him suffer eternally.

Well, then comes it, the punishment... You will HAVE to fight the queen regardless of whether you have soared Sans or not, as you have taken lives of... Too many to make just a singular act of mercy somewhat mattering.

That is all. Will confess, it took me quite long to write this, as I had to constantly switch between the written and Discord where I asked Kate about this and that not to make the facts in the text biased... But, heh, luckily, I have finished it in the end. So see you next time and meanwhile, bye-bye.

Distrust Difficult Mode currently owned and remade by Kate; previously owned by Luxent.
Distrust by... Eh..? Fandom, I suppose, have no idea myself.
Underswap by Popcorn Prince.
Undertale by Toby Fox and Temmie Chang. (A little reminder again, Temmie is responsible for almost all artwork and sprites you see in UT)
