Thanks. I'd say its my first real backround. I was really just testing how well I would do with shades and all that jazz. Apparently not too well. There's always room for improvement, though.

Oh yeah, you're doing traditional art. You shouldn't really worry about backrounds then. I think its better to just paint them or something. :S

It's not that hard after you learn the basics and get used to how a tablet works. You just need a tablet and the software and it shouldn't be a problem after some practice. A whole array of new options become available, too, especially because of colors.

well the problem isnt the learnign or the tech, its the money. i cant afford it, heck, i am using scraps for supplies. cheap, old pencil crayons i find around the house, paper from the school printer... etc

That's unfortunate. Money is indeed a limited supply for me too, but there are tablets that you can get for $40 that are still good, although as basic as they get. The only reason there are more expensive tablets is mainly due to size and I believe Wacoms have the option to work only on one monitor, which mine lacks therefore I can only use one monitor, mainly because I got used to it using only one monitor. With two monitors, its area changes on the screen(I can't really explain it). As for software, I use Sai, while there are also free ways to get software like that that require money(although illegal, I'm just going to guess that most people torrent things now-a-days). Then there's free software that you can get legally such as Gimp and other such softwares.
The tablet I use, by the way, is a 6x4 VisTablet. It's pretty much the smallest and cheapest tablet I think that you can get anywhere, for like $40. Honestly, it's a great tablet to start off with since if you don't like it(chances are you won't like digital art as a whole if this is the case, since if this is your first tablet, you won't know how to compare it to anything else and should be assumed that all tablets feel the same despite area of work difference) you won't feel like you wasted a more-than-comfortable sum of money on something that wouldn't provide much more entertainment than a game, which can cost up to $20 more than that.

She could be a bit more blue, especially on the dark side.

Yeah, not gonna lie shading is tough, especially when you've got a saturated color for a light source.

Yeah. How does it look now? I changed it up a tad bit.

TheLovelyChemist In reply to 13light [2011-09-01 18:44:15 +0000 UTC]

Better, but she could still be a bit more blue. Here's an idea of what you should be going for [link]

Basically looks like a black silhouette, but if you were to come up closer to the person, like say how far away we are from RD, we'd still be able to see their features and stuff. So basically, the side farthest away from the light source should be almost black, and the very edges of her body have little bits of color, some saturated by the sunset.

I know I may sound like I know what I'm talking about, but really, I'm only learning too. I hope this helps, and that someone else can come along and cover some stuff that I neglected to do.

I see, thanks. Not sure if I really want to tinker with the colors though since realistically, I would have little or no clue as to how to go about it. I guess I'll leave her be for now or something. I appreciate your assistance, either way.
