Description
*NOTE*Thank you in advance for any comments/favs. Due to carpal tunnel I am very limited in my ability to respond to comments or favs - at this time.
My moose walking (uninvited) companion, in December 2009.
This is one of two photos I took. MOOSE ENCOUNTER OF THE CLOSE KIND is here: [link]
Cannon Powershot SX-20 IS.
This was not taken with a telephoto! I did not approach the moose to take her photo – you never do that to a wild animal!
I was out taking scenic photos in and about the woods and the moose apparently had been hidden in the woods by all the snow on the trees when I walked through the path onto the small University parking lot. I turned to the rt. to take photos and with the camera still up to my eye, turned around to the left and there she was! It was such a surprise! I never heard a sound with all the heavy snow and frost completely sound-proofing the woods and with my back turned!
It only took me about 2 seconds to figure out I could not outrun her and would probably spook her into charging if I moved suddenly….so I completely froze, barely breathing. Then it only took her about 2 more seconds to reach me! She passed within 18 inches of my nose (I could have patted her on the nose) and if you look at the photo you’ll see she was so close that I couldn’t get all of her rt. hoof in the pic! (the photo linked above) I assure you I was not paying attention to focusing the camera!
The only thing I moved was the forefinger on my rt. hand to snap the 2 photos. I’m surprised I had the presence of mind to do that! I’ll admit it was quite unnerving….I’m sure you could hear my heart pounding a block away and I was more than relieved when she kept walking on by!! Though I’ve seen and had many moose in my yards over the years, it was my first close wild moose encounter in 44 years here.

So was I when I first downloaded this photo from my camera! I love taking snow photos so when it's all white and fluffy and heavy snow I always think of " The Chronicles of Narnia, The Lion The Witch and The Wardrobe". I love the snow scenes in that movie!
Glad you saw that too! Happy New Year!

Reminds me of the time me and my family where camping outside, and then in the morning when my dad should leave the caravan to get some water he just closed the door again. Everyone looked at him for a couple of seconds before he spoke, " It's a flock of reindeers outside! One of them are standing not even five meters from the door! It must be over a hundred of them, dear god! What should we do?! " They moved on to a nicer field about a hundred meters away an hour later, but it was a bit scary.. But now when you look back it's just hilarious!
Oh, and this shot is absolutely gorgeous!
Sorry if my english is bad, I'm from Sweden

Thank you so much!! Oh my gosh! That would be scary! Really scary! You must be in northern Sweden? We don't have reindeer here in Southcentral Alaska, but do have them farther north. Plently of moose and bears though! Do you have bears? I have always been interested in Norway, Sweden and Finland....probably because there are similarities in climate, beauty etc. and I love Alaska!!

Yeah, northern Sweden And we have bears but they're not very common. The bear population are going up though, and so is the number of wolves
And thanks for the little English lesson, It will not go to waste!
Happy new year to you too

Thanks for your comment! In a funny way they are cute! You should see the baby moose - they are adorable! I have a shot of twin baby moose and have debated putting it up since it's not as good a resolution. I'm still thinking about it. I love snow too...that's why I do the snow photos! There are more snow photos in my gallery Happy New Year!

Thank you so much! Funny...I don't know how old the moose species is even after living among them for 44 years! I'll have to look that up! It was that "once in a lifetime" shot....I just got lucky!

Hey there fellow Alaskan! Really.....I did not know that! Do you have deer there? We don't here in Southcentral. I've been in Alaska 44 years but only visited Southeast briefly on the ferry a number of years ago. Hope your winter and New Year is good!

Thanks for that very nice compliment! I had to write the story to explain the photo since I normally shoot higher quality - I was more concerned with surviving, than how good the quality would be! Your English is fine!

Thank you so much! I had to write the story because the resolution is not as good as what I normally shoot! The harder I tried to hold the camera still....the more the camera shook! In retrospect it's wonderful to have had the experience - particularily since I survived it!!

Wow! Great picture! what a chance. I understand your feeling. I encounter a female moose too. me too I could rob her nose with my hand but I didn't move. I wanted to avoid her to charged me and my parent. We we're in a canoe observing her feeding on the shore of the lake for more than an hour. It was a thrilling experience...

1arcticfox In reply to cyberarts1st [2010-12-30 21:09:14 +0000 UTC]
Thanks so much! You're smart to not disturb her! Moose are very unpredictable so you don't know what they will do if they feel threatened.
That sounds like a great experience! I've been here 44 years and still love seeing/watching the moose.....from a safe distance!! They are fascinating creatures but I'd just as soon not see them this close up!

Yes it is a great experience. Me too I like to observe them when I got a chance. Unfortunately my dad is a seasonal hunter...^.^ I see mooses more often as a steak in my plate then free in the wild...LOL!

We do have plenty of people here who hunt moose for food, which I do not object to. People have to survive and not everyone has the money to buy all their food at the store - or even have a store to go to. I lived in "bush" Alaska years ago and most people hunted for their food. There was a tiny, tiny store and food had to be flown in and so it was VERY expensive! I bought very little at the store! Happy New Year!

Was it a young cow or full grown? Maybe a big calf?
If it was young it might explain it's curiousity XD
I live in Northern Ontario, I've had some close encounters with smaller game like partridges and foxes, but I haven't seen moose much these past like 5 years. Hopefully I'll have get out next fall for my first hunting trip and get to see one, if not put it in my freezer.

1arcticfox In reply to Sassykatt1 [2010-12-30 21:04:15 +0000 UTC]
It was a female, probably 2 years old so not full grown. I think it was so focused on food that it didn't care about much else! I don't know how populated Northern Ontario is, maybe that has something to do with a lower moose count. Alaska is very unpopulated and the city is surrounded by water on one side and wilderness on the other side. They are nearly as commom in the city as dogs used to be before there were leash laws.
