Description
“Fragile” pencil on hot press watercolor paper 30” x 40”The light bulb has become my symbol for life, what once was “alive” with energy and light is now rubble to be swept up and replaced. Fragile is about how precarious life really is from pre-birth to death a content struggle to hang on to life, the eyes are of my wife Valerie and by best friend Todd who are more than twenty years apart in age and in different stages of this very short journey.
What it is not is pro-life or pro-choice although if the viewer interprets it along those lines it’s their truth and for a brief moment the truth of the artwork.

This is, to use a cliche, mind-blowing. Honestly, I actually stopped and examined it rather than just skimming past (I'm not usually captivated by much I see here, but this is marvelous).
Just seeing that filament dangling there, and the surrounded broken glass hit with the soot from when it all popped, it looks like a murder scene (I'm an electrician in theater, broken bulbs and lamps make me sad).

A really neat quality to this drawing is that the broken glass sort of looks like it could be a sailboat in the ocean, breaking apart and sinking.

I just recently won a national drawing show with this, so go figure. It came from a lot of symbolism I have been experimenting with, a matter of fact when I get the Blues for Mama drawing done I want to get back to this series. Thanks. Gerald

No it doesn’t mean that much, it so subjective anyway. I’ve been entering shows, national, statewide and regional for years and I have gotten thrown out more then I care to think about.

when you draw things, especially eyes, it's as if the camera is focusing just right and you capture a mix of blur and sharpness in your image. it's wonderful.
