Description “The Simplicity of Silence” Pencil on Board, 45” x 80”

Normally one puts their work on a gallery wall and the work needs to carry the power to speak to the viewer, if it’s successful the work will ignite the viewer’s imagination and art is made. The only hint the artist gives is the title in this case “The Simplicity of Silence”.

Yet at DA we learn, we teach, we read, and art is discussed, and this having been a wip I’ll try and go over what has turned from a perceived 500 hour project to more than 1800 hours and why it was worth it.
Ever since getting out of art school years ago, I suspected that talent was a farce, sure there exceptions Mozart, Picasso, Joe Bonamassa and a few others but these are prodigies more so than “talented” people. For the rest of us “talent” is more an unstoppable interest and drive, a work ethic that at times seem almost obsessive. Once this practice gives you a foundation to work on, ideas and concepts make up the rest and none of this comes easy. When my students complain about their art assignments all have to say is; “suck it up, art is hard, get it done”. Yet time put into an individual project doesn’t mean 1800 hours-that alone has nothing to do with the success of a work. Kathe Kollwitz could do with a line in a very short time what 99% of people could never do but it took years of observation and repetitive technical study to get there. Personally I have to spend a lot of time on my work to say it in my way; in a nut-shell my fascination is with the complexities of nature, of the human face of a broken light bulb and so on. Simplification is not an interest nor do I feel that I have to avoid it when see a need for it. I go about my work in a simple formula, composition, concept, technique… success is never guaranteed for the viewer has to be moved to fill the artistic circle, after all art is still a form of communication.

“The Simplicity of Silence” was at times horrendously repetitive, I would sit at the drawing board almost on the verge of hanging it up, but I know at these time I have to rise to the occasion and work thought it. I took no short cuts, I stuck to every branch if they heighted the vision and left out only the ones that took away from the flow. I have experienced every snow flake every twig and branch every shadow and highlight this is a journey that taking a photo could never give me. Because of this hyper-involvement I hope to share my visions with the viewer in a way that a photo cannot do. This obsessive act translates to the viewer in a complete different manner. I’m not interested so much in any particular “ism”, photorealism or hyper-realism per say, but I am interested to show the viewer just how I see my world. Technicality I used about one hundred photos as references, I used real branches and twigs that I had in my studio and went to the original place many time although that changes daily, winter turned to spring, to summer to fall and so on. What I do not want to do is just copy a photo but translate and reinvent it with my knowledge, imagination and artistic language, the photo is only a map, finding the treasure is within me.

I want to thank all who have commented on this long wip, I thank you for the question and keeping the discussion going. My hope is that it inspired people the way you all inspire me.

“The Simplicity of Silence” is dedicated to my dad Fritz Mersmann who passed away during this project, he was my only teacher.

I'm sure your father would be proud of this piece, it's beautifully executed. It's been great seeing all of the work in progress steps to reach the final artwork, the detail makes my head hurt - you truely are a great craftsman when it comes to pencilwork. Congrats on completing it.

Unbelievable--and not just because of the size of the project.

thank you my hope is that the size was necessary for carrying the shear amount of data, but not just big for bits sake, matter of fact when saw it on the wall it was strangely small....

Breathtaking, Armin.

At a later date, perhaps, I will come back and offer a few paragraphs of insightful, intelligent sounding commentary. As of this moment, all I can honestly offer is awe. Having followed the progression of this, I can see the "art" in this perhaps more easily than some others. I feel I understand how much of this is interpretive. That this is so only serves to increase my awe.

Absolutely breathtaking, my friend.

No one viewing this piece can ever share those 1800 hours with you. I know enough to know that every time you look at this piece, every single one of those hours will be there with you, intimately. Every hour is in the image. I feel certain you can see each one, as easily as you see each branch and twig. I can recall no event in my entire life to which I can assign 1800 hours which, thereafter, will always be mine, an integral part of the experience.

In seeing the permanent result, the living, permanent testament to those hours, I cannot help but feel your experience as an artist is and always will be richer than mine, for having been the author of this work.

Unbelievable.

your are right Rob that time i spent was unbelievable, not in a "oh im so dedicated and suffered for my art way" not at all, people who pave roads or gut fish they suffer to make ends meet. the unbelievability was in the emergence-the daily trip though and few inches of sticks and snow, thinking "where does this branch start or end" "where is this shadow coming from" and so on, to become a small area of our world for 1800 house was a blessing, yeah it was hard but so what.

i would love to hear more from your take of this drawing Rob, you always have a great narrative and open my eyes to nuances Ive not thought about

Armin

When we create we are left with our own thoughts, that drive us insane at times, we are left to face our selves. And yes art is hard, it does not only take persistence and patience but the courage to face ourselves, where in process we bear our soul naked for others to see. I am so sorry to hear about your father, you gave me very kind words about my grandmother while back and I wish I could return the favour. To me this drawing is not only Simplicity of Silence but Simplicity of Solitude. You not only experienced every branch, shadow and snowflake, but you have transferred yourself into it. Thing is when we create there is never silence, our inner voice screams, talks, cries, makes us finally listen, because that is only time we open ourselves to it. Our inner conversations end up being recorded through every stroke of the pencil, our soul poured into it. Not to many people understand that art is about journey more than about the final product. The world you show to the viewer is beautiful in its solitude. Thank you for sharing a part of your soul with us.

When I saw this finished I threw up. I hope you're happy, your perfect artwork has made me question my very existence and driven me to the brink of suicide on more than one occasion, but this? THIS? This is crazy good. This is the stuff Thor's hammer is made out of good. This is obscene. I love it.

Letting my eyes roam this picture and trying to comprehend each pencil stroke is as mind-boggling to me as trying to comprehend the size of the Sun. I just can't do it. I get lost in the amount, and my brain melts a little.

Even as a stand-alone image it is so full and striking, but understanding what has went in to it... from shadows on the ground to the hundreds of twigs in the background, I'm just looking at it for ages, shaking my head and being left dumbfounded.

People overuse the word 'awesome' and it should be saved for occasions like this.
