Description
“The Simplicity of Silence” Pencil on Board, 45” x 80”Normally one puts their work on a gallery wall and the work needs to carry the power to speak to the viewer, if it’s successful the work will ignite the viewer’s imagination and art is made. The only hint the artist gives is the title in this case “The Simplicity of Silence”.
Yet at DA we learn, we teach, we read, and art is discussed, and this having been a wip I’ll try and go over what has turned from a perceived 500 hour project to more than 1800 hours and why it was worth it.
Ever since getting out of art school years ago, I suspected that talent was a farce, sure there exceptions Mozart, Picasso, Joe Bonamassa and a few others but these are prodigies more so than “talented” people. For the rest of us “talent” is more an unstoppable interest and drive, a work ethic that at times seem almost obsessive. Once this practice gives you a foundation to work on, ideas and concepts make up the rest and none of this comes easy. When my students complain about their art assignments all have to say is; “suck it up, art is hard, get it done”. Yet time put into an individual project doesn’t mean 1800 hours-that alone has nothing to do with the success of a work. Kathe Kollwitz could do with a line in a very short time what 99% of people could never do but it took years of observation and repetitive technical study to get there. Personally I have to spend a lot of time on my work to say it in my way; in a nut-shell my fascination is with the complexities of nature, of the human face of a broken light bulb and so on. Simplification is not an interest nor do I feel that I have to avoid it when see a need for it. I go about my work in a simple formula, composition, concept, technique… success is never guaranteed for the viewer has to be moved to fill the artistic circle, after all art is still a form of communication.
“The Simplicity of Silence” was at times horrendously repetitive, I would sit at the drawing board almost on the verge of hanging it up, but I know at these time I have to rise to the occasion and work thought it. I took no short cuts, I stuck to every branch if they heighted the vision and left out only the ones that took away from the flow. I have experienced every snow flake every twig and branch every shadow and highlight this is a journey that taking a photo could never give me. Because of this hyper-involvement I hope to share my visions with the viewer in a way that a photo cannot do. This obsessive act translates to the viewer in a complete different manner. I’m not interested so much in any particular “ism”, photorealism or hyper-realism per say, but I am interested to show the viewer just how I see my world. Technicality I used about one hundred photos as references, I used real branches and twigs that I had in my studio and went to the original place many time although that changes daily, winter turned to spring, to summer to fall and so on. What I do not want to do is just copy a photo but translate and reinvent it with my knowledge, imagination and artistic language, the photo is only a map, finding the treasure is within me.
I want to thank all who have commented on this long wip, I thank you for the question and keeping the discussion going. My hope is that it inspired people the way you all inspire me.
“The Simplicity of Silence” is dedicated to my dad Fritz Mersmann who passed away during this project, he was my only teacher.

Indefatigably resplendent in it's obvious complexity yet the hushed solitude it evokes is the very simplicity the title suggests. Blankets of pillowy snow lovingly tucked in around each and every limb, twig and earthy nuance as if put to a night's slumber by some insinuated maternal presence indicated but not seen. In this piece, twice frozen in stillness as well as ice, does one find a peculiar warmth as if to nestle one's self adjacent the fallen log is but an ordinary and correct thing to do. This warmth I feel, I keep as a reverent and quiet reverie for you Armin so as to not disturb this, The Simplicity of Silence in all of it's delicate, wonderful and replete beauty and solace.
Thank you for yet again, another auspicious gaze through the window of your heart.

You are sincerely most welcome, Kind Sir. I'm enjoying (at a nice, slow and comfortable middle-aged pace) the journey of getting to know yourself and your very accomplished craft if not altogether getting to know you because of the same. The pleasure is all mine, I assure you. And if there is anything that I have learnt about you yet, it is that I would hedge a fair guess that there is already another project in the wings if not already started by you and from you. Heh.....we are similar in that regard.

Well Armin,
I have a lot to say, so I will go boring your ears off...
First off, I think you've reached your goal. It marks the hidden message and as you described as what I know as artistic impression (seeing the world through your eyes). Your trademark is in the realism part that it has always to be patient enough to see what fascinates and what trips you make. It is a piece you have to look longer, or you'll just see amazing lightfall & technique. Strangely, I get a strong message to complex roads. It is the midpart that is causing it, along with a call for certain songs. It is obvious that the contrast of details adds the amplification: the solitude big-log against the complex weavenet of wooden veins. I might not have the smae fantasy, but that is a celebration. I do have a same fascination you talk about is the thing I took photos from. It is what I call "the burst" as shattered glass. It is so at random, just like nature is, but somehow complex. It translates for me to what humans are.
I also know your lesson-the-hard-direct-way. I can get into discussion, cause I think you can motivate people with that, but you can obliterate the will of someone who is sensitive for these kind of motto. Cause sometimes it is just not complaint and have a low esteem, or not willing to draw. Sometimes you actually have a problem... And even though you mean it well and they shouldn't whine your ears of...some of us just aren't that way. It is a complex part of how someone is. Hard-Armin is not Soft-(who might ever that be).
I have to admit one thing... It is really ironic... I'm uploading my work now, which I started in about the same period as you did. We both finished on the same date. Both almost swamped by reproductive details. Both have the same base-drive. I had this feeling I wanted to finish my drawing before you did, but I felt about 3 months ago i felt somehow I would finish it the same time as you did. The 500 hours you talk about is more applicable for me. I'm not wanting to be that, but i just noticed....weird...but then again, i am .
Congratulations on a fantastic work Armin, there is a lot to celebrate here and definitely worth the time waiting, like watching intrigued Lord of the rings for hours and hours.
I know your dad would be mighty proud if he saw this...I would .

Thanks Mike you always bring up inserting and unusual points most i agree with some i dont. as for others how they work, if they whine or whatever that's just people being different and i know that, i am a very obsessive guy that's good in some cases but honorabl in others just ask my wives and kids, they moslty think im an asshole and you know what, they might have a point.
