Description
“The Simplicity of Silence” Pencil on Board, 45” x 80”Normally one puts their work on a gallery wall and the work needs to carry the power to speak to the viewer, if it’s successful the work will ignite the viewer’s imagination and art is made. The only hint the artist gives is the title in this case “The Simplicity of Silence”.
Yet at DA we learn, we teach, we read, and art is discussed, and this having been a wip I’ll try and go over what has turned from a perceived 500 hour project to more than 1800 hours and why it was worth it.
Ever since getting out of art school years ago, I suspected that talent was a farce, sure there exceptions Mozart, Picasso, Joe Bonamassa and a few others but these are prodigies more so than “talented” people. For the rest of us “talent” is more an unstoppable interest and drive, a work ethic that at times seem almost obsessive. Once this practice gives you a foundation to work on, ideas and concepts make up the rest and none of this comes easy. When my students complain about their art assignments all have to say is; “suck it up, art is hard, get it done”. Yet time put into an individual project doesn’t mean 1800 hours-that alone has nothing to do with the success of a work. Kathe Kollwitz could do with a line in a very short time what 99% of people could never do but it took years of observation and repetitive technical study to get there. Personally I have to spend a lot of time on my work to say it in my way; in a nut-shell my fascination is with the complexities of nature, of the human face of a broken light bulb and so on. Simplification is not an interest nor do I feel that I have to avoid it when see a need for it. I go about my work in a simple formula, composition, concept, technique… success is never guaranteed for the viewer has to be moved to fill the artistic circle, after all art is still a form of communication.
“The Simplicity of Silence” was at times horrendously repetitive, I would sit at the drawing board almost on the verge of hanging it up, but I know at these time I have to rise to the occasion and work thought it. I took no short cuts, I stuck to every branch if they heighted the vision and left out only the ones that took away from the flow. I have experienced every snow flake every twig and branch every shadow and highlight this is a journey that taking a photo could never give me. Because of this hyper-involvement I hope to share my visions with the viewer in a way that a photo cannot do. This obsessive act translates to the viewer in a complete different manner. I’m not interested so much in any particular “ism”, photorealism or hyper-realism per say, but I am interested to show the viewer just how I see my world. Technicality I used about one hundred photos as references, I used real branches and twigs that I had in my studio and went to the original place many time although that changes daily, winter turned to spring, to summer to fall and so on. What I do not want to do is just copy a photo but translate and reinvent it with my knowledge, imagination and artistic language, the photo is only a map, finding the treasure is within me.
I want to thank all who have commented on this long wip, I thank you for the question and keeping the discussion going. My hope is that it inspired people the way you all inspire me.
“The Simplicity of Silence” is dedicated to my dad Fritz Mersmann who passed away during this project, he was my only teacher.

There is always an element of the artist's style I think, no matter how precise the drawing is intended to be. I imagine there is always a subtle accentuation that the artist adds, even subconsciously, maybe to what they feel are the most important elements of what they see in front of them.
I dunno, I see an appreciation for a sort of silent chaos; the way in which the branches appear frantic and a criss-cross of light and dark, contrasts and shadow, an example of one of the many ways in which nature can't be tamed I think, showing how it isn't just the crashing waves or rushing clouds that appear to move/ grow lawlessly... Anyway, beautiful picture, getting lost in it, well done

Lol yeah! My first year in Utah it rained often in summer and then the winter was terrible I would spend like one or two hours sometimes most of the morning shoveling snow and then I would do it again later and then the day after and so on. It was ANNOYING. This year, we got almost no snow at all, certainly not enough to be worth shoveling, and we have had hardly any rain until about a week or two ago, and any rain we have had has been on and off.

Maybe there are many many many hours work in it, but there is no creativity in it. It's just an awful bore!
In a photo with the same motif nobody would be interested. By the way, this is a photo - a drawn photo
Everybody can do this, the only things you need are patience and quite much boredom
In addition: What!?! "The suggester said: ... using an incredible technique ..." What?!?
It's a simple technique, which you learn in school - rasterizing and shading.

Lets just say anybody can do this, im not about to argue that one and if its a bore to you that's your interpretation so we don't see the world the same-fine i looked at your work and i have really nothing to say about it certainly you dont do what you state. So here we are you hate this kind of uncreative awful boring stuff but i do owe it to people who read this to explain a bit why i do it, and by the way Ive taught art and some major colleges across the country inducing CCS, Kendall, the American Academy of Art and Baylor University so the idea of you not liking something doesn't offend me at all, nor will i bother to disagree with you on a personal level to create a dialog for obviously you're minds made up. But i will explain my thoughts on realism to the people reading this not to sell my work to you or anyone who is offend by it but to fly the flag of any "ism" that any artist creates with passion and believe you me i was passionate about this drawing.
If copying without change, construction and re-invention, be it form a photograph or from life, then the creative process is not addressed, in this case I agree there is a useless element about it, it becomes a fundamental exercise at best. There is nothing wrong with these exercises if it improves your knowledge and skills as a technician. But if your aim is only to draw like "a photo", I'm afraid you will never attain what "art" has to offer. Also I think too many photo-realists rely on technical eye candy alone, with no imagination, in some sense just a limited skill in observation and a stunted creative process. Working in this manner should be a foundation to build on not an end goal.
My goal as a realist is to understand complexities and details; my interest is how the human eyes perceive not how a camera sees. The hallmark of photorealism is capturing distortion and out of focus areas precisely how the camera does, I'm aware of these things and eliminate most of them. My journey begins at the first look of my model the drawing process then becomes an all consuming study. When I complete the work, I develop an understanding of the subject that's both heightened and very personal. After spending hundreds of hours drawing a person's face all the while observing the small details that cause "likeness" a journey takes places that cannot be achieved by any other means. I don't draw just what I see; it's a combination of facts and feelings that would not work from just a snap of a shutter. I change and alter many thing from the reference photos to me they are just a blueprint an informal guide at best, I transform not just translate what I am observing. I look at small particulars of a person that cannot be seen or deciphered by "normal" cameras. I delete, enhance, elaborate, exaggerate, alter and reinvent, and I do this with putting it through my own psyche. I change what's in front of me, not for the sake of change but because it's inevitable and expected, it's filtered through 40 plus years of living. I have 100% control of every aspect of the final image can this be done with a photo and Photoshop? Perhaps, but not with my unique and very personal technical and artistic language.
I have seen many that like to piss on others work for what ever reason you're not the first nor the last to take the low road, and if you think this comment helps me or anyone else its just not constructive enough to be concerned in any way intellectually sound.
this is you [link] really? come on lets face it i just wasted my time even bothering to comment on your statement

I don't know whether you (have) waste(d) your time. You should know this yourself.
And I don't wanted to "piss on" your work - I just only wanted to say my opinion.
But I see, that you have a problem with it.
You prefer to take a bath in compliments and you let celebrating yourself as a master. But that's the problem, by this you lose the floor below the feet and get extremely arrogant.
