Description Through The Iris III (BB Winslow)

Pencil on Arches Paper 18" x 36"

i know eyes? So far they still fascinate me especially at this scale, my earlier drawings where small at least comparatively to this one. There will be four in the series titled “Through the Iris” (my thanks to 10 years for their continued inspiration). Only three will be shown the first one sold-but three is a better number anyway.

I just love to draw them-they are us, each one of us-without giving credence to the whole face they become universal more than a personal portrait. Also drawing them lets me improve as an observer and draughtsman. My interest is the aging skin and the breadth of textures within the human face that gives a hint of a life lived. The clarity and makeup of the Iris and the multitude of hair on the human face is a fascinating subject, and I have at least one more in me, possibly more.

Two will be 18” x 18” this one is 18” x 36” which is very large. They will also answer a host of questions on drawing in this kind of scale for my plan is to draw a 72”x 72” face later on this year.

I used forty to sixty reference photos and a mirror to draw this image taking about 300 hours, although the time element is overrated, it takes what it takes. Thank you to Mr. B. B. Winslow for agreeing to let me age you a bit.
Here is a view of the size of this drawing with myself standing by the work, it is not in a show called “The Anatomy of an Idea: An Invitational Exhibition” at Midland Center for the Arts. I have seven works in the show with fifteen other great nationally known anatomically based artists

You're welcome.

So your aim was to typify your friend and his state of mind? (BTW, it wasn't crits, but more a direct perception).

Have a nice birthday!

Mike

Yeah, I noticed... Luckily it is a stronger point of mine. Maybe I should move fromout there. Can't captivate the dynamic in reallife. Maybe I'll just search deeper.

Wow, the detail in this is incredible! I love how literally every tiny wrinkle is shown.
It's definitely hard to be believe it's done with a pencil it's so good.

Out of curiosity, I'm sorry if this has been asked quite a few times before, but how do you get the darkest areas that dark with a pencil? Whenever I try it, the area ends up looking almost shiny.

many light layers with a very small lead .5 2B and drawn in circles, this doesn't flatten the fiber of the paper, and you get very little shine but it takes a long time

Have you ever derived an average number for the amount of time you spend on a single piece, then used that number, allowing for time to sleep and do other things, and tried to determine (roughly) how many pieces you can complete in what remains of your life?

I sometimes engage in such intellectual time wasters. Sometimes, it gives me insight. The numbers for things like pieces of art, songs, can be humbling. Often they are so in direct relation to how seriously we treat our chosen discipline.

For example: I am 50. Over the last 3 or 4 years it turns out, when all is said and done, that I produce roughly only 4 new original songs per year. No matter how many I work on, or who I work with, or what kind of song, when all is said and done, and the calendar ticks over to the next year, I almost always have about 4 new songs.

Using this figure, and assuming I live another 20 years, that means I will likely produce only another 60-80 songs before I leave this world. Does this seem like a lot to you? It does not, to me. By engaging in this little exercise, I gain a perspective on how important it is not to waste my effort on any given song, and not to let time slip away without me working on my art.

Your work is so much more intensive. I would guess you spend far more hours in a day, more days in a week, working, than I ever do. Do you ever think that it might be good to more carefully choose what to draw, or how to spend those days and hours... in order to maximize what you produce that will live beyond your time... that will represent you wen you are gone? I do.

Just a thought, my friend... inspired by the way your work amazes and inspires me.

Food for thought.

i actually kept track of hours i worked since i was 12: 702 works and just over 50,000 hours of work. You are right it a finite number that i can make in my lifetime and i also think i can squeeze another twenty years in God willing and that might equal 60 - 100 works. Unfortunately there is another thing to think about, one that i didn't give a damn about in my youth that's salability and what i am known for. To start something in a different style even though i might want to makes no sense to me nor does drawing things that don't interest me just because they sell, for instance right now im not inspired to draw the whole face. The trees seem to call on me the most; they are what i am these days serene, and abstract. But if I would look at my next twenty years as doing only trees-no I can’t go there, surrealism has lost its appeal and now my main reason to do art is to understand observation of the unnoticed. Its like this drawing it’s not going to sell to a patron but they do sell to museums who would want to look at this every day over the sofa? The trees sure
thanks my friend its always good to hear from you

Still; can't believe it is a drawing and not a photo. But that is more a reflection of my dismal skill which prevents me from even conceiving of such mastery.
