Description The Hammond Fire Department covers 15 square miles and in the 1940s had a population of just under 3000.

The fire department’s fleet in the late 1940s consisted of 3 engines, 1 ladder, 1 2500 gallon tanker, 1 brush truck, and one rescue truck, all responding from one fire station.

In 1946, the Hammond Fire Department needed a new primary engine and began looking for a replacement. After looking at nearby departments for possible options. Hammond FD decided to purchase a new engine based on the specs of the Kingston’s new Engines 3 and 8 (www.deviantart.com/1stresponseemergency/art/Kingston-FD-1946-Ford-Fire-Engines-886926134).

In Summer 1947, GS Work Trucks delivered a brand new engine based on a 1947 Ford 1 1/2 ton chassis. Engine 1 served the department for 20 years before eventually being retired in the late 1970s.
