Description
The Vega Protectorate is one of the major Human Interstellar Empires and is unique in that it's the only such empire whose capitol system has no planets to speak of.The Vega Protectorate's history began when explorers first traveled to the star Vega, what they found was a blue, main-sequence star ringed by a dense asteroid field with a radius of 120 astronomical units and rich with valuable and rare minerals alike, making the system a veritable treasure trove. A number of large corporations (at this time they would be considered proto-megacorporation, as they have immense size and power, they still do not yet have the influence to be considered a true megacorporation) set up self-sufficient mining stations throughout the asteroid field to extract the valuable ores, process them, and then ship them back to Earth. For a quarter of a century these facilities operated under the control of the mining corporations without too much incident. However, as time went on, pirates would come into the system, setting up bases of their own to attack mining bases and shipping lanes, corporate security for these individual stations would prove inadequate at the best of times to deal with the threat, and laughable at worst, while the United Nation's own interstellar fleet (which would eventually evolve into the United Earth Alliance) was stretched thin dealing with the fiasco that was the Gliese 876 colonization along with trying to maintain a presence on Earth's other extra-solar colonies to have any presence on Vega. So as a result the various mining stations agreed to form a protectorate which would have the member stations pool their security forces together in order present some kind of organized resistance to the continuous pirate raids. While this allowed the miners to fight off the pirated plaguing them, it also germinated a resentment toward the corporations for having not done enough to protect them, and in time this resentment grew into frustration as the miners demanded more and more autonomy, which the corporations refused to give. Approximately 50 years after the formation of the Protectorate that it's ruling council, and chairman at the time Peter Reson, declared independence from both the corporations and the nations of Earth To become their own sovereign state. While the UN was all too eager to recognize the sovereignty of the Vega colonies (as this meant less for them to deal with), the corporations saw it differently, to them this constituted theft of corporate property and so these corporations sent a private fleet of their own to reclaim the stations, this fleet was large enough that it could've challenged the UN's own space-fleet. This led to a 3-year-long war that ultimately ended with the colonists victorious. This not only led to the Vega Protectorate growing into an interstellar empire with numerous worlds under it's control, it also was the death knell for the megacorporation, after seeing the sheer size of the corporate fleet and it's defeat led to many nations putting forth heavy regulations on large corporations as well as revoking a lot of old laws that allowed corporations to be recognized as citizens. In the end, the power large corporations once held would be severely diminished and the idea of a true megacorporation ever coming into existence died before it ever came into existence.
Presented here are typical uniforms for Protectorate security personnel. on the left is a Protectorate soldier carrying a standard-issue laser-carbine, normally a special weapon in other armies, their uniform is comprised of an environmentally sealed spacesuit which incorporates a carbon-fiber weave to protect against small arms fire as well as ceramic plates to absorb heat from directed energy blasts. Because the uniform is built around an EVA suit, protectorate soldiers are able to operate even within a vacuum. on the right is typical Protectorate support personnel jumpsuit designed to apply pressure to key points on the body to redistribute blood in the body so as to mimic being in earth-like gravity when in micro-gravity conditions.
