Looks great. I especially like the vivid colors. The DOF makes it really thrilling...

Nice DOF effect! The shapes are interresting too!
Is it a built in option in Maya, or it's a depth render pass and you create the effect in post-production?

It is an option in Maya.
You can do it in post too, but it gives nicer results in Maya,
and longer render times...

Same thing in 3Ds max... this is why I always do DOF effect in post-process!
Nice work!

rendered it at 2560px wide and it took about 22 hours for the beauty pass

No image in the background, just more of these that have been blurred out with depth of field...

On another note. How did you create the exturded 'tenticles', by extruding verts or polys?
Did you manually bend each one, or use some other technique?
And is that a gradient ramp for the texture?
Sorry for all the questions, lol!

I did it by extruding poly's,
did it all at once. The modeling of these
cant have taken more than 4-5min.
Not a gradiant map but a SSS shader.
All good

Damn, I haven't used 3ds max in ages ( I know it's different from maya, but I should still be quicker, ahaha)
Please share the technique for the 'waveyness' of the tenticles?
Extrude the poly a few times, as to get the extra polys along the tenticle, then add noise?

etruding a few times, moving them slightly as I extrude.
Only about 3 extrutions.
No noise....
The extutions were made with a smooth proxy modifier on that allows you to see a smooth version of the mesh as you move the lower poly version.
