Yeah, hw1 has a more distinct theme (and ofc graphical limitations) compared to hw2 (tho hw2 is still awesome).
I really liked how alot of Taiidan ships in hw1 seemed inspired by sea-creatures, like how their assault frigate looked like a phiranna, with the assaultgun platforms on which the turrets where mounted looking very much like fins (along with the conning tower.
As a followup, i really liked how the Kushan/Hiigaran ships were all astheticly similar to the Taiidan, but with their own twist, which makes sense, seeing as they had to research and develop those ships as they encountered the Taiidan counterpart most of the time, which too me mostly says that the scientists of the mothership in hw1 most likely didnt really wanna change what they couldnt improve or adapt to their own needs, because it already worked. ofc, the chunky asymetrical box design is obviosuly very heavy with the kushan/hiigaran fleet XD

Kinda makes me wonder what the homeworld 1 kushan/hiigaran fleet would've looked like had the Gaalsien been the ones to "ascend" instead of the coalition.

Sorry, i recently finished a hw marathon playthrough and i'm just gushing over the astehtic choices and the lore X3c

I like how HW did not derive its design from sea ships and planes like what's commonly used in many SF. HW ship felt like space whale cross with polar bear wearing a school bus. It frist appear as exotic and awkward, yet nothing looks wrong, I only discovered its appeal years after I played those game. Its physics is till fictional, but the design was not constrained by any specific reference, it looks "space" not to meant realistic but just neat. Everything looks heavy weight with no respect to any particular design profile, chunky brutal savage, but elegant in its own way, weapons were made into unrecognizable lumps, almost is counter intuitive, but perfectly blend with the bulky structure of ship. An effort to minimize polygon but ended up as a design signature. HW ship design was one of the best use of uncanny principle, where it appears as if some familiar element presented in a way that is mysterious. This style was originally developed by SF illustrator Chris Foss, most famous adoption was Dune. HW end up with the same design principle mainly because it need to save polygon and want to be colorful. Please keep ranting more, I love to discuss this. I don't know what is Gaalsien and coalition? Can you explain?

Jolleboi In reply to 4-X-S [2016-12-22 09:28:58 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, i like that too! I remember one of the first things that struck me when playing HW for the first time was the motherships design, i had never imagined that a spaceship could look like something like that, a giant space boomerang/banana XD

I also do like how, despite the fictional elements, some logical thoughts of cunction has still been put into the design, like the Taiidan Assault frigate, how its armament is all in the front section on the hull and placed both ontop of and underneeth the "fins", as well as in the nose itself, meaning it truly looks like it is ment for an assault role, charging the enemy head on and breaking through with immense firepower.

I also really like how you can visibly see how they have reused the same basic hull designs for alot of ships of the same class (frigates in particular for both kushan/hiigaran and Taiidan ships), where you see alot of a perticular class of ship in the design of many others, gives the impression that the factions found a good modular design that worked well for them that goes along with their doctrines, and built their other ship classes on that hull (support frigate for kushan/hiigaran, and assault frigate for taidaan in the case fo frigates).

And that stuff you said about Chriss Foss is really interesting, i didnt actually know he worked with Dune, thats really cool!

Oh, and about coalition and Gaalsien, i guess you havent played the game "Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak" then? It was released like, one or two years ago i think? It is a prequel to Homeworld one, telling the tale of how the northern coalition (basicly a union of the majority of the planets kiithid), in particular the S'Jet Coalition carrier Kapisi, went on an expedition into the desert to the location where they would discover teh Khar Toba, leading to the events of HW1.

The Gaalsien, is the antagonists of Deserts of Kharak, a Kiith with radical religous beliefs whom beleive that the kushan were put on kharak as devine punishment from the great Sajuuk, to suffer for their sins (sounds familiar). To seek the stars is forbidden acording to them, and so when the northern coalition began to shoot satelites into space with plans of manned space flights on the way, the Gaalsien declared a holy war on the coalition.

I reccomend watching this lore video: www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mr_lhC…
and its followup part. These videos do a pretty good job of explaining the lore of deserts of kharak. If you like the homewoorld games i also have no doubt you'll like deserts of kharak, its a solid game, although it has yet to receive proper modsupport (the devs have said they are trying to make a mod dev kit available eventually)

What i was refering to in my previous post was mostly the fact that the coalition and gaalsien, both being kushan, have vastly diffrent asthetic looks and tech. The Coalition use the blocky, asymetrical designs common for the kushan of hw1, whith wheels and tank threads for most of their vehicles propulsion. The Gaalsien on the other hand, have a sleek and more rounded design, using hovercraft technology for all their vehicles, making great use of hit and run strategy and tactics. I was just imagining, since deserts of kharak is a prequel, of how diffrent the kushan in hw1 might have looked had, lore wise, the gaalsien won and, as they called it, "ascended" (reached space and developed hyperdrive tech), instead of the northern coalition. ofc, deserts of kharak came out long after hw1 so the gaalsien didnt even exist prior to deserts of kharak's release, but its fun to imagine and fantasise X3c

The mothership I think is now one of the iconic SF design, its appeal however was how it appears normal for such an radical concept. It was surprising how quickly I got used to it. The mothership was a true Foss concept put into practice. I guess it was inspired by some strange sea creature of the deep. Good SF design is logic applied to a fictional physics, even with fictional physics you still cant make things any way you want really, viewer engagement aside, it has to be a materialization of some effort to exploit the magic or whatever. I like how most of those ships did not use deck layout of warship at sea, the guns are placed all around, at places that is convenient for space. No ships are lettered with turrets, HW design has very few weapon installed on a relatively huge system, which is a sign of proper engineering. Those weapons feels massive, and I like their hammer appearance, structurally blend with the hull. Turrets are made into pill boxes, which is a good design, looks neat on the hull yet would be realistic in a sense.

The class wise hull base was how most ships in HW was designed, remember that destroyer class form HW1? I was attempting to design HW2 ships with HW1 aesthetic. this makes sense in real life too.

I did not play Shipbreaker XD not unite I get a discrete GPU, which I don't think any time soon. I watched some people play remaster, which looks amazing but really isn't much difference from the original, not to mention I have CATA. Those can run on integrated graphic and is the same game. The lore was very interesting for Shipbreaker, they really took some time to expand the universe, I hope they can rewrite the HW2 which had a very weak story. I imagined a different plot, we can have 4 games made from HW1 arc, 2 game made from HW2 arc. HW2 should not have the spooky BS about progenitor super weapon, and should be continued from CATA.

HW1 arc takes about 200 years, HW2 arc takes 50 or 80 years, the ending should give path to HW3.

I feel like, one of the reasons the motherships is such a wonderfull design that one gets so easily used to, is that while you are playing the game, it feels like it makes sense. Diffrent types of ships have diffrent docking bays, it looks tall and significant on the battlefield, and yet it has an almost harmless look to it that makes you look at it as something you dont want at the front, but something supporting the front, which ofcourse is exactly what it does. ofc look deeper and one could argue that the mothership could not possibly fit all the strikecraft and frigates you are suppsoed to be able to support inside it, but at the same time one could argue that the lore provides a good enough reason for why it actually can fit that many ships. Just as the refinery ships have beams capable of deconstructing materials into their base atoms, they have construction equipment that use the base atoms to construct ships and equipment, just as they possibly could store some pre-contructed ships in atomized form and then quickly reconstruct them upon exiting hyperspace for launch. ofcourse that may be overcomplicating things and the reality is simply that some realism and logic had to be sacrificed for gamplay, but even so i like that there was still an idea there for the logic in place.

Speaking of designs, do you have a favourite hw1 design(s)?
I think for me i cant soley pick one as my absolute favourite, but i think the Taiidan Assault Frigate i've mentioned so much is very iconic to me, and for its purpose in an assault role, its design makes alot of sense to me. Other than the assault frigate, i'm actually gonna say that i really love the way the resource collectors and resource controllers of the kushan/hiigarans were designed, and how they interlink with eachother.

also, here's hoping you one day get the parts you need to play deserts of kharak (or shipbreakers as i you and alot of fans understandably call it given the games history and original title XD), its a beautiful game, one for which i hope the devs fulfill their promise of making mod tools for.
Also, i do agree that the story of hw2 was a bit weak compared to deserts of kharak/shipbreakers and homeworld 1, and i dunno but when i played it, it felt much less of a heartfelt struggle than that of the other games. I will say tho that the final mission of hw2 when you have to protect hiigara itself was, in terms of missions, really good in its ability to create an awesome sense of urgency, and truly make it seem like it was a battle for all or nothing, a last stand, and i think thats largely because rather than just saying "x number of missle hits left till defeat" at the bottom, they instead counted the number of people still left alive on the planet, and let you see the impacts on the planet, knowing you could have prevented it! It is very emotionally powerfull, and i love how hw2 did that (although i am left wondering just where these, as the game called em, "bentusi looking" planet destroyers came from, and am a bit sad that they dont really make much sense to me. Like, why would they have to switch those claw things around, why do they make missiles that are buiilt underneat it, then fly behind and over it before going on its intended trajectory, when they could have been designed like dedicated missile siege ships firing directly at their intended atmospheric reentry trajectory? I feel they would have made more sense as giant lasers given their design, but perhaps thats just me).

I definetly feel like there is more to eplore in teh homeworld universe, and that whole stories/campaigns could be written and made about various things happening in the universe at the time of "the end times" and inbetween it. but hey, if the devs wont make it, there's always the mod community, since the devs at leats gave us the means to amke our own missions and stories (and more) with the homeworld universe and engine ;D

The mothership remind me how space is space XD the vertical design is unique but completely valid, sense it makes no difference in space. It was meant to standout visually yet do not require overblown proportions compare to other ships, remember this is an RTS, it need to fit everything into a screen, you cannot have a dramatic size difference between units else would not be manageable. The mothership while huge do not take much horizontal space on screen sense that is your play ground. Mothership class of other factions never raveled the signature design of Kuhsan, they are good design but not in a way that is radically different from the rest of ships. Of course you cant completely go Β scientific else we would not have any SF, but there are things that need to be in logical order, things that do not require sophisticated technical knowledge. Like how should everything fit into a storage space etc. Basically anything that makes sense with the naked eye cannot be compromised. The spooky stuff is free to explain away but not the common sense.

My fav HW1 design was the multibeam frigate. It a pity they never touched this concept again. I think the encounter at nebula brought a surprise to most people during those days. And how That thing was much less deadly than it looked, the down side was it was difficult to control. Somtaww attempted their version which was a great idea to keep ion frigate constantly moving to work around its greatest weakness of lacking agility, more difficult to counter attack. Thus make enemy's life a little harder. But too bad the fire power was't anywhere to justify an ion cannon. Funny how in HW2, they can put 4 of these on a platform 1/3 the size of a frigate class yet still did more of the same. And I was a little letdown on how the destroyer class lacking on their main weapons (Higgrian without ion cannon, Vaygr without pulse blaster) which greatly compromised their capacity. Not sure what interlink you are talking about, interlink was used on Acolyte form CATA.

I have the means to upgrade but my life style don;t justify an investment in gaming PC or console, I grown passed the age where I can spend most of my leisure time on game and worry about how they look. I will dig some let;s plays, and take a look at the plot and vehicle design. Too bad my computer isn't the one you can just pop in a GPU, its PCIE is no longer compactable with modern hardware, to upgrade I need to do a ground up build. Talk about mods, I think this is an advantage of being less graphical, the less graphic complexity it requires the less difficult to make the mod. I don;t know about other games but take HW for example, the remaster version had so much trouble than the original, and is the same game anyway.

HW2's plot permanently closed down any opportunity to HW3. The only hope to further develop was to continue the alt universe from Cata, which is much better than HW2 anyway. What I don't like about HW2 was the end times and how that related to some spooky progenitor super tech, which had no place in previous plots. The HW's story had a deep religious atmosphere and that was a part made it unique form most other SF. But it almost felt like Higgrians cheated the war with some alien tech, this contradict the spirit of the original with Kushan fought every turn on equal ground, this is important because you don't see historical warfare fought with UFO coming from skies. They fought a mightier foe before, why cant they pull a victory with Vaygr the old fashioned way? We aren't lacking any historical reference on winning uphill battle in term of manpower or money or tech. Not to mention no signs from any earlier installment hinted Sejet as a messiah, she was a great leader, the attempt to make her into a god had undone what previously established, thus ruined her role as a leader.

The mod Im working on was an attempt to do away from the rather hallow HW2 story, Im not sure it can ever be made. But I will get some of the design work done, those who are interested will a have a direction to work toward. BTW did you checked out my new concept for Higgrian counter parts, I used part of the Taiidan Assault frigate design, you gonna like it.
