Description
The afternoon autumn light was warming Bear’s face, so very welcome after hours wandering the cold, stinky caves. But he couldn’t enjoy it.
What separated them from freedom were a bunch of big, sharp rocks that seemed impossible to overcome.
Harmony shouldered him out of the way, immediately trying to find a way to climb over the rocks.
Bear looked over his shoulder, anxious to comfort Faye whom the caves were exhausting most.
She stared back at him blankly. With an uncomfortable feeling Bear realised just how beat the little mare looked. Her belly seemed especially huge on her other wise delicate frame. He prayed the foal would make it through the stress their dam had endured that past weeks.
Bear nudged her flank in an attempt to comfort, but other than a little snort she didn’t react.
„Hey, why don’t you drink a little?“ he suggested, gesturing to the trickle of water that was coming from between the rocks.
Faye followed him, seemingly only now registering the water, and moved to drink.
„Bear, look here!“, called Harmony.
With one last look at Faye, Bear turned to the other mare. She was staring determinedly at the rocks.
„I think if we try to climb over this path we could make it“, she explained.
Bear looked closer. One of the rocks wasn’t quite as steep as the others, a horse had a real chance at climbing it.
Still, he wasn’t convinced.
„The surface is so sharp, we might slit our hooves trying to walk over them. And Faye isn’t really steady on her legs right now. If she slips and falls, I don’t want to imagine-“
„I can do it“, a soft voice interrupted him. Bear and Harmony turned. Faye had finished drinking. She had a determined look on her face, visibly tightening her posture to stand more steadily.
„And besides, what choice do we have? There’s no way I’m going back into the caves. This the only way out.“
„She’s right“, Harmony said quietly. At Bear‘s doubtful expression she stretched out her to touch his shoulder.
„Look, we‘ll take her between us. I’ll go first and pick a steady path and you’ll go last to support Faye on the climb. It’s just a way steps to the other side. It’s totally doable.“
Seeing that he was outvoted and not having any better counter arguments, Bear acquiesced.
„Alright. Lead the way, Harmony.“
She nickered approvingly and heaved herself up the rock.
Anxiously, Bear watcher her pick her way up. But even though the surface was anything but ideal, she walked surely and without tripping of even hesitating.
Her confidence and calmness made Bear feel better. She really seemed to know what she was doing.
„Now you, Faye!“, called Harmony from the top of the rock. Seeing her tower over them, self-assured and with a concentrated look on her face, Bear felt something flutter in his belly. He was unsure what to make of the feeling. He‘d never felt something like this before…
Shaking away his thoughts, he concentrated on Faye who was trying to boost herself up from the ground with her hindquarters.
Bear hurried to give her a shove with his shoulder. The added momentum propelled Faye fully onto the rock, stumbling slightly and also giving Bear a light kick in the chest.
„Umpf“, he grunted, briefly winded.
„Are you alright??“, called Faye with a panicked voice. She tried to turn around to him, but the way she was standing on the rock and her big, quite inflexible belly made it impossible.
„Yes, yes, don’t worry! You didn’t hit me very hard!“, Bear rushed to reassure her.
„Keep moving up to Harmony, I’ll be right behind you!“
Visibly relieved she hadn’t done any damage, Faye moved forward.
„I’ll do my best not to kick you again!“, she said, a teasing undertone in her voice.
Accompanied by Harmony’s amused nickering, Bear climbed up the rock after Faye. He found that it looked much more insurmountable than it actually was.
Still he was only able to relax once his hooves hit the soft grass on the other side.
Relieved and thankful he danced around the two mares, rubbing against them with renewed energy.
„Let’s go“, he said, ready to leave the caves behind him. „I don’t think I’ll ever step hoof in a cave again.“
Faye and Harmony immediately fell into overlapping agreement.
The three horses moved along. Bear let the breeze caress his face and took a deep breath, thankful for the sweet, rich autumn air.
He turned to Harmony and said bashfully, „Thank you for keeping a cool head and getting us out of there. I don’t know what i would have done without you back there. I’m so sorry I led you both into the caves. It’s my fault we got lost in there and almost didn’t make it out. I should have been smarter.“ He addressed the last bit at Faye too.
Harmony butted him softly in the shoulder. „We did make it out of there though. You’re still very young, Bear, and very new to the position of herd stallion. You don’t have to bear all the responsibilities alone. I have more experience than you, it’s only natural that i know what to do in sticky situations, because I’ve been in them before.“
She paused for a moment, before adding: „I’ve made mistakes too. But that’s what a herd is for. We work together.“
