Description
A humanoid interpretation of a Manticore. While this looks like something that would be right at home in a Dungeons and Dragons game, it was actually my pop-media interactions that drive this one. I had a tendency to give winged creatures very large wings. In part as a nod to the fact that big flyers need big wings, but also just because of a personal preference for large wingspans. I never shaded the original drawing, even though it sort of needed it to convey the correct sense of pose. And now, the backstory.
Of the animated television shows that I have seen, the best, for my money, was Gargoyles. It was fun, and while it was kid friendly, it wasn't childish. In fact, it had some surprisingly mature methods of dealing with things that would normally get the G.I. Joe PSA treatment, or be a sitcom "very special episode." In any event, the Gargoyles found a group living in London that exhibited traits of mythological/heraldic creatures, such as Unicorns and Hippogryphs. And that is where the idea of a Manticore gargoyle came about. Clearly, I wasn't really going for the Disney look. To be sure, I'm not 100% clear on what look I was going for, however.
