Poison (ポイズン Poizun) Is today known for being a character in the Street Fighter games but her first appearance was in the fighting game Final Fight in 1989... in Japan that is, not here in the west. *

Concerns during the game's development about reactions from North American audiences to fighting women led to the character being re-imagined as a "newhalf" (ニューハーフ). That did not fly however and both Poison and her palette swap Roxy were replaced by the male characters "Billy" and "Sid", and have been for every subsequent North American port of the title on Nintendo consoles and handhelds.

In 2007 Akira Nishitani, the director of Final Fight, stated that he supposed the character "could be male", but added it was up to the viewer to decide.

Akira Yasuda, the creator and designer of the character, commented that as far as her gender, he considers her transgender in North American localizations, but cis in Japan.

Personally I`m a subscriber to the idea of Poison being trans. Partly because it honestly makes her more interesting than if she had been cis, but also because there are so few fictional trans characters in the world and trans people don`t get enough representation.

But I also admit that Poison is, with her highly sexualized design, not exactly the best example of positive representation.

Guess you didn`t expect a small essay attached to a simple drawing of Daffy in drag.

* It may be possible that she appeared in european releases but I`m really not sure, take what I say with a grain of salt.

Daffy Duck was created by Tex Avery and Bob Clampett and belongs to Warner Bros.

Poison was created by Akira Yasuda and first appeared in a Capcom game.
