History:

0-4 years: Kal was born to a soft father and a hard-headed mother. She grew up learning how to be both logical and tough, but she also learned how to care about others and find the small joys in life. The only child, Kal was cherished by both her parents. Though her home life wasn’t perfect, there was never a shortage of love.

5-9 years: They had no problem passing their hunting test to become a full member of the Linx pack, but hunting definitely wasn’t where Kal’s passions laid. She instead found a spot as a farmer’s apprentice in one of the few small farms that managed to grow potatoes and wheat in Linx territory. She was skilled with her Earth magic and kept the rocky soil fertile throughout the growing season.

When not working, Kal spent most of her time at a local tavern with her friends. It was here that she heard of the settlement in Beryl Bay where members of all herds lived by the ocean. Thinking of such a place awoke the young maer’s urge to travel. Hearing about her daughter’s dreams of wandering, Kal’s mother gifts her with a set of fish bones that would guide her to her home no matter where she was.

When she holds the small pouch, she feels that her path home leads out of the Linx tunnels. She follows her instincts south until she reaches an inn located in Beryl Bay. After staying for a few nights, she ends up becoming a bartender there and leads a fulfilling life.

The owner’s son, Heben, and Kal fall in love quickly and within a year are living in their own apartment and expecting a child. 

10-14 years: Kal’s second daughter comes in the spring of 1998 and the next summer the family inherits the inn. Heben spends time away from his job as a fisherman to help renovate the business into that of Kal’s dreams. Though the inn had always been busy, Kal’s skills as a manager make it the busiest spot in their part of the settlement. 

They only hear about the events of the Formaris Crisis through talk at the bar, but it scares her. Though outwardly stern, Kal cared deeply about her two daughters and their father. The winter of no magic is scary. What makes it even scarier is waking up one morning to find that her appearance had changed. She considers it a blessing for Acetaeos telling her she was on the right path in life.

Emboldened by her blessing from Acetaeos and the return of magic, Kal is more excited than ever to give birth to her third daughter in the summer of 2001. With the success of the inn and Heben’s hard work, the family renovates the once-humble living quarters attached to the business. Bekett and Thora, both old enough to want their own space, are grateful to have their own rooms and Kal is happy to have an office of her own to work in. 

15-now: Kal watches their daughters grow up into headstrong young maers. Though Bekett had moved out as soon as she could, Thora stayed to help her mother in hope of one day inheriting the inn. Life is good.

In 2004, Heben was killed in the Hihiri attack. His water magic isn’t enough to control the flames that overtook the inn and he dies trapped in the fire. Kal has the funds to rebuild...but finds that her heart wasn’t into it. The father of her three children and best friend was gone, and she didn’t know what to do. Thora takes over most of the running of the inn while Kal spends her time tending to a small garden in their backyard.

It’s a late evening in 2006 when she’s going through her childhood possessions that she finds the fish bones that had led her to Beryl Bay so many years ago. No longer does she feel at home. Resting a paw on the bones tells her what she had been suspecting: it was time to go back to the Linx Mountains. Her plans are delayed by the appearance of the Nightmare. She doesn't encounter the beast herself, but befriends two patrons who told tales of fighting the horror on the beaches of Beryl Bay. Like many, she stays close to home and keeps her guard up for anything unusual. 

Word of the creature's disappearence or defeat slowly filters in from others frequenting the bar. So does the news of the Austerians holding another tournament, Winterspar. She decides this is the perfect chance to visit Auster on her way back to Linx territory.
