wow, WOW! there is just so much character in this piece, most of have been said already by the other comments - and therein the resulting conflict lies the beauty of the piece...
... and yes, there is a certain handsomeness to this *being* - there is a certain gravity etched into the slope and edges of the face, particularly around the mouth and the somewhat high, back-leaning forehead...
and the textures are wonderful, rough and lend a weary, desert-worn, dust-coated traveller's appeal that sort of holds everything together and add the warmth of color of that rubs off some of what would be a malignant appearance...

It's really rare that I've been so deeply impressed and unnerved at the same time. I agree with ... I don't know how to explain it, but knowing whether he, as a being, is good or bad would very much alter my opinion on his appearance.

It is odd how he is frightening and malignant, but also handsome, in a way- as if his actions, if they were either good or evil, would truly determine whether he is viewed as a beautiful or awful creature.
I'd like to think he is good- but that is my natural inclination. ;D
