THE COMMONWEALTH OF BENGAL IN 1949, ROYAL BENGALI EMBASSY IN WASHINGTON D.CThe Commonwealth of Bengal is a country full of assets. Located by the Ganges delta, Bengal is made of lush tropical forests and fertile rice paddies. It borders Hindustan and French East India to the west, Himalayas to the north, Burma to the west and the Indian Ocean to the south. Its export-centered economy takes advantage of its large population, who mainly works in rice and tea culture and textile industry. Bengal is a region with a rich history. British rule started in 1612 with the Mughal granting the East India Company the right to establish trade posts. British rule progressed up the Ganges while the Mughal power declined during the 17th and 18th centuries. Finally in 1907, the colony of Bengal was granted the status of dominion.
112,000,000 people live in Bengal in 1953, making it the 4th most populated country in the world after Chine, the Soviet Union and the USA.
Since 1945, Bengal is a Commonwealth Realm, a sovereign country with special economic ties with the UK and King William V as its head of state.
Bengal is a multiconfessional country, with Hinduism & Islam being the two main religions, accounting for 48% and 44% of population, along with large Christian and Buddhist minorities.
Upper Bengal, also known as Bihar, is the birthplace of Buddhism. It is where the Buddha lived during the 5th century BCE. Near Gaya, the Mahabodhi Temple is where he is believed to have attained enlightenment.
Rice production. 32 million tonnes per year. Second biggest producer in the world after China, rice is the main source of alimentation of Bengalis.
Tea production. 400,000 tonnes per year. Second biggest producer in the world after China, tea is mainly cultivated in Brahmaputra valley.
Textile industry. Bengal is renowned for its jute and silk textile it exports all around the world. Growing industries in the Calcutta region provide employment for millions of people.
Steel industry. 1.2 million tonnes per year. Bengal has a flourishing steel industry, created by British investments, since the discovery of coal and iron deposits in Jharkand.
The Sundarbans tropical forest, in Ganges delta, is home to the famous Bengal tiger. It is the national animal of Bengal, central in Bengali culture and present on its flag and coat of arms.
English, Bengali & Bihari are the three official languages of Bengal. Bengali is spoken in Lower Bengal and Bihari in Upper Bengal while English is used by the British administration.
Calcutta is a major industrial and trading hub of Bengal. Founded by the East India Company in 1609, it is strategically located near the Bay of Bengal. It enjoys large manufacturies built thanks to British investments. In the south of the city, the Victoria memorial is the symbol of British power in the region.
