Description
Peacocks never seem to get much coverage in character design. Maybe that train intimidates artists. It certainly gave me trouble.Note, by train I mean the feathers usually misidentified as a peacock's tail. They aren't tail feathers; they actually grow from what is roughly the middle of the male peafowl's back.
Anyway, I needed to figure out how to do the feathers with enough detail that said peacock, but not with a higher level of detail than the rest of the piece. I think what I came up with is okay, but I'm still not completely happy with it. I have another drawing of him in the works and I think for that one Iām going to dust off my colored pencils rather than use Photoshop to color it.
I have greater control with the pencils than I do with the mouse for fine details and well, lines. Iām left-handed, but use the mouse with my right-hand, so all of my digital coloring is with my off hand.

In an interesting aside, most characters with a Peacock motif are female. Additionally, I often see images titled "Male Peacock". The name of these birds is Peafowl. Only the males are called Peacocks (cock means male bird) and the females are referred to as Peahens (hen means female bird). Only the males have the famous feathers. So what's with all of the "female Peacocks"? Talk about your oxymorons and redundancies.

Thanks. I just sort of threw different effects together and pushed them around until it looked reasonable. Every now and then I just don't have a plan on how to do something so I experiment until things work out.

Very interesting idea. ^_^ I like the detail of the train immensely.
