Link opened his eyes. His vision was blurry but he could vaguely make out some faces. He blinked a little until he could clearly see seven worried faces looking down at him. 'Where… Where am I?' Link asked in a barley audible whisper. His throat was sore and his mouth was dry.'You're in Kakariko village, in the Elde Inn.' Link turned his head and saw Luda looking down at him.
'We brought you here after the explosion. We thought you were…' Ilia started, but she couldn't finish.
'Dead? Nah, you can't get rid of me that easily.' Link said with a weak smile. He tried to sit up, but he winced and fell back down again.
'You shouldn't push yourself, Link. You were seriously hurt in that explosion, especially your arm.' Renado said sternly, but he was clearly relieved that Link was alright. 'Children, we should give Link some space, he needs to recover. Link, you should rest, it'll do you good.' Link nodded.
Ilia stayed behind and watched the children and Renado leave the Inn. Then she turned to Link. 'Are you okay?' She asked, a worried look on her face.
'Yeah, my arm hurts a bit, but I think I'm okay.'
'Good. What happened anyway? What caused the explosion?'
'The Kargaroc had a bomb. Only now do I realize that I probably could've grabbed the bomb and thrown it instead of using my sword and putting everyone in danger.'
'Probably,' Ilia smiled. 'But the important thing is that we're all okay.'
Suddenly Link remembered something. 'Where's Epona? Is she okay?' He asked, sitting up in the bed.
'Don't worry, Epona's fine. After the explosion she must have sensed you were hurt and she took us straight here.' Ilia said, as she pushed Link gently down onto the bed. 'I should go and write to father; to tell him that we arrived safely.' She said, standing up and walking towards the door. 'You should get some rest. I'll be back to check on you later.'
After Ilia had left Link thought about what had happened. He was in a lot of pain and he was tired, but something didn't make sense. When Ganondorf had been defeated all the monsters had disappeared, so why had they been attacked by a Kargaroc? And why was it so strong? Link sighed and turned over onto his side. He felt a sharp pain like he had just been stabbed by a thousand knives and realized he was lying on his arm. After a while of asking himself questions with no answers, Link yawned and closed his eyes. Eventually he must have fallen asleep.
Some time later, Ilia opened the door to the Elde Inn. It was silent. 'Link?' She called softly. She went upstairs and into Link's room. He was snoring gently. Ilia smiled. She sat on a chair and watched him sleep. Link's lips were moving as if he was speaking to someone but no sound came out. Ilia heard a knock at the door and went downstairs. It was Talo. 'Ilia, How's Link?'
'He's fine, he's asleep.' Ilia said quietly.
'Okay, soup's ready. You comin'?'
'Yeah,' Ilia and Talo left and shut the door quietly.
Link was having a strange dream. It was like some sort of flashback of everything that happened on his adventure, in little clips, but it was backwards. It started with Midna saying goodbye and breaking the mirror, then Link was running towards her after defeating Ganondorf, only to find her in her true form, and then Link and Zelda were watching the castle explode. It continued like that until Link transformed into a wolf for the first time. Link could practically feel the pain he felt that time he transformed. He felt as if he was being ripped apart with a million knives being stabbed into him from all sides. Finally Link could take no more pain. He shot up and cried out in pain then collapsed onto the bed, awake and breathing heavily.
He rolled over onto his front and saw that the pillow was covered in hair. Brown hair. The bed sheets were ripped and torn. "No, oh, Farore, please no. Not here, not now," Link whispered to himself. There was a small silver dish next to the bed. Link looked over at his reflection. He saw the one thing he hoped he would never see again. He was a wolf.
