Description
The girl behind the bush was timid, Quinn realized. She wouldn't move until she was sure that there was no one there except Quinn, and even when she did step out into the open, she would stay low to the ground and ready to run back into the forest at any second. She never said much; in fact Quinn still didn't know her name. She liked to come out and just… watch. Watch and listen as Quinn told her about her day and how she liked grade two. Occasionally, the girls' brown eyes would light up at parts and she would just show just the smallest hint of a smile. Quinn loved when that happened; the girl was so pretty when she smiled.
"You can come out," She took a tentative step towards the bush, and the girl backed away. "No, wait! I'm sorry." Quinn took a few steps back and saw the girl's eyes on her—peering through the bushes. "
"I'm sorry," Quinn repeated. "I didn't mean to scare you."
It was a minute before the girl stepped closer again, and Quinn had to force herself to stay put instead of reaching out to her. She waited—somewhat patiently—for the girl to step out into the yard and sit down not a foot away. She still looked nervous, but no longer frightened.
"It's okay. I promise no one is home." The girl nodded and Quinn smiled, "Will you tell me your name today?"
The girl didn't respond right away. Instead she tilted her head to the side—as if she was contemplating it. It was a good five minutes later and Quinn had almost lost all hope when the girl, very quietly, said one word; "Rachel."
