Description
there is a color for january here,
in this wet, evergreen state
recognizable only in the evening hours,
just before you notice the sun
begin its final descent.
a blushing pale orange
over the black shadow of conifers,
a fading swath of watery blue appears
like a hasty watercolor.
everything is coated in the cold, golden light;
the sun, trying to steal back the months
it loses at this latitude.
every state has chalky grey rains, and
mercury red summer, sometimes
even an unforgiving white of winter.
the sun extends its reach until
january's color finally fades and then
grey grips us again until mid june.
