Description

The very first finished art piece of the year and boy am I kicking things into gear from get go. The idea to draw something for one of my favourite characters in action games has been in the head for a very long time. Once I got the idea to draw a DmC I had an idea in my mind to make a counter opposite to 'Never Surrender' piece and this is pretty much the idea for what you see folks. I've always seen DmC Dante and DMC4 Nero as basically two sides of the 'punk with a heart of gold' coin. One is from the western perspective (where that character archetype is more popular) whereas the other is the eastern perspective of the same thing. Another guy that Nero reminds me of is Gene of God Hand fame who's also very very high up there for me.

If I were to describe what I like the most about Nero is that he's a very emotional dude or a guy who pretty much wears his emotions on his sleeves. He isn't afraid to show both affection and fury right up in the face as compared to say Dante who's pretty much always trying to be the calm stoic guy but at least not super dorky eye rolling stoicness of his brother. A big downside of that kinda characteristic is that the person is more prone to be manipulated and we see how in DMC4 Nero's actions were not entirely in his agency. Pretty much most of the game he's being reactive instead of proactive and I think those kinda guys are much better in situations that allow them to be more proactive. So Nero was on the backhand of things, being pretty much in the dark while still trying to make sense of things going on and save his special someone from danger. Speaking of her, Kyrie is a disappointing character sadly and it's not really on her but rather Itsuno and Bingo dropped the ball big time on her. I understand DMC4 had a troubled development to say the least but even after reading Bingo's novel on the game, I still felt that this is just not it and hell the novel was even more cringe at points. At least she was in the game right? *stares at DMCV*

Nero's attitude is also something very entertaining to watch for me personally as to how he interacts with people. I still remember the first time I played the game and saw this punk dropkick the series poster boy in the FACE with ZERO hesitation, I just knew this kid has no fucks to give. With the proper context of the scene his action only seems better as he did it to attract the Mysterious Assassin's attention away from Kyrie. He could've done literally anything in the world for that but the fact this dude chose a dropkick to the face will get the job done is what got me hooked lol. NOW That's what I call making an impactful INTRODUCTION. It's a very ballsy one too since I just knew the moment that happened that it will piss off pretty much most if not every DMC3 Dante fan at the time while very select few would be laughing at the hilarity of the situation. You can guess which one was me. I greatly respect the devs going for that kinda gamble and taking that risk when they could've easily played it safe like I've seen other situations of 'passing the torch'. Whether ya like it or not, at least they aren't even remotely as memorable to me as that of this MADLAD Nero. The balls on this kid haha

Speaking of passing the torch, if you ask me I'd say Nero isn't taking over from Dante but rather he is taking it over from Sparda. The reason why I say that is mostly cause just like Sparda's story, we have Nero pretty much fighting for the love of his life. Dante (esp Itsuno's Dante) can talk all about humanity and heart all the hell he wants but when push comes to shove I've literally never seen the dude DIRECTLY saving nor even commenting about a single human soul meanwhile Nero is shown trying to save people right after he gets Red Queen. That's the difference, words are just words and actions speak way louder. That just reminds me more of Sparda who pretty much fought for entirety of humanity and love of his life against his own brethren at the time.

So his design is cool, his weapons both Red Queen and Blue Rose (double barrel Revolver which he himself made in a culture where guns are looked down upon), unique playstyle with Devil Bringer, most unique DT among the descendants of Sparda and kid's got a lot of spunk and an honest attitude instead of just trying to be THAT cool guy all the time. While he's impatient, arrogant and a hothead, I've always seen great potential for him. Furthermore, he's so cool that I am willing to overlook his relation with his claimed 'father'. I ain't buying that shit a single bit, it doesn't even make sense for that guy to even do something like fucking a Human girl at the age before the events of DMC3 even and that's the end of that.

While story, lore and actual personality of characters of DMC games have mostly been just 'eh' for me but when it comes to the gameplay? oh baby does DMC4 delivers. His moveset is small but pretty much each move is quality and has multiple uses which is in stark contrast of Dante having huge ass list of moves and most of it are situational for FreeStyle play. He's also very much the success story for DMC4 as Itsuno and his team set out to make a character who's easier to get into but has enough going for him that would still keep people playing and messing with him. In other, words low skill floor but high skill ceiling or Quality over quantity. Oh did I mention this dude has the best taunts in the history of DMC? cause that air guitar is so fun and the dropkick as well. Look I can keep going about this kid and honestly if it weren't for him I wouldn't have played or given DMC4 as many chances that I did over the years cause fuck learning that old guy in the red or magenta coat with that control scheme initially at the least..after I got the hang of things with Dante, 4's Dante is extremely satisfying to play as well. DMC4 really is the real DMC player's game. Luckily, I ain't one of those so I wouldn't know what that's like. Hey what I like DmC so I know I am automatically out of the equation lol.

I had a great time with this one, always wanted to put my boy Nero out there somehow and very happy that I finally am able to. I finished this piece over a few days and tried a few different things to see how they'd work out. I am still in the process of figuring things out and what not as usual.
