Description
I've loved mermaids ever since I was little and loved the lore. (Even though I can't swim worth a damn) Here's a few head canon about different types I had.

Beach Mermaids
Love visiting the surface, and aren't as afraid of humans as their sister races. Collect human trinkets and mimic humans through song and dance.
They have huge lungs instead of gills and are able to hold their breath for good amounts of time (an hour sometimes 2 at most)
Sleep in coves or on shores
Omnivores
Human Lifespans
Due to curiosity and naivety get caught by fisherman on occasion yet still has too much trust in humans eventually leading to their near extinction
Hair and tail are compromised of bright colors and normally have dark sunkissed skin tones, as they spend a lot of times beached.

Sirens
One of the the most beautiful, their scales are made up of gold, silver or opulescent scales and skin muted colors so they can swim up to sailor boats somewhat disguised as treasure, causing the sailors to follow into sharp rocks out of distraction.
If that doesn't work they're melodic voices puts sailors into a stupor.
Travel in pairs to deal more damage
Dislike humans and will go as far as eating them to get the job done, there are rarely any survivors from a Siren attack
Strictly Carnivores
Can breath underwater
Long lifespans can live to 200

Bioluminescent Mermaids
Live near the bottom of the ocean
Travel alone
Herbivores
Almost blind uses bioluminescence to guide way
Too afraid to travel upward but they can completely breath underwater without need of air ever
Short lifespan of about 40 years
Extremely good swimmers and strong due to the pressure of the ocean

Bottom Feeder Mermaid
Live in the extreme deep crevices of the oceans
Sizes vary from that of a shark to a baby whale
Carnivores
Once were Atlantians that were regal and big and beautiful but after it became ruins were cast away by the ocean to live in solidarity in the deep.
If they ever remember who they once were, they'd surely rise up and take over merkind.
Diet consist of curious merfolk
