Description An unwrapped Cube is a collection of 6 symmetrical squares, usually in the pattern of a cross.

Similarly, any 3D object can be unwrapped and laid out in it's component shapes on a 2D plane. In order to place a 2D texture on a 3D object, unwrapping is mandatory. After modeling, the initial unwrap is a mess of overlapping lines, vertices, and polygons; it is chaos. Cleaning and arranging the patterns to give them the most texture space is a practiced skill.
