You're my bestest friend ever, Rainbow Dash!I like to think that Rainbow Dash and Derpy are best friends, and that Rainbow Dash is very protective of Derpy even though she sometimes seems a little harsh on the muffin loving natural disaster.

....How about Ditzy Doo? The name she was supposed to have before Hasbro changed it at the last minute, and by doing so caused this whole mess for themselves?

The character Ditzy Doo never appeared on screen, and Lauren Faust said that it whether she was the wall-eyed grey pegasus or not was up to the fans. The fans were calling her Derpy Hooves from the get-go, and the animators picked up on that and made her cameo in almost every episode. Unfortunately, Tabitha St. Germaine assumed Derpy Hooves was a male when Hasbro finally decided to give her a voice. Nobody corrected her, and Tabitha's not the best at voicing male characters. The end result was a Patrick Star-ish, deep-but-still-recognizably-female voice that a lot of people hated at first because it didn't match her portrayal in most fan fics, but evidently grew to like. The episode was taken down when some people thought Derpy's voice was deliberately making fun of people with autism and Down Syndrome and filed a complaint to iTunes, which is obligated to remove "offensive" content. Apple informed Hasbro, who had the episode redubbed to be "less offensive".
The animators have apparently stated they intend to keep up with the Derpy cameos as usual, but that the character will no longer be voiced.

Oh, trust me, I know the background behind the character and the reason for the episode edit.
Which is also why I know that fans are blowing this whole issue way out of proportion and putting blame on Hasbro way more than they should: both the people that complain about her being "offensive" to the mentally hanicapped and the fans that assume that Hasbro is out to ruin all their fun when Hasbro didn't even have to make a shout-out in the first place.
But also, an official response written by the writer of the episode comments that she was originally to be called Ditzy Doo.

Well, that certainly does clarify things. Thank-you. There's a number of ways I could respond to this, and this is gonna be a bit long, so bear with me. -_- As far as I knew, the bronies started calling the wall-eyed grey pony with the bubble cutie mark "Derpy" as a shout-out to Mr. Derp from South Park (about as offensive a cartoon as you can get) and that the term referred solely to her wall-eyes. Urban Dictionary is the only place where I found the term "derp" used to mean "retarded", and it's even less reliable than Wikipedia can be when it comes to sourcing things.
I don't consider myself a brony, and I agree with you that things are being blown out of proportion by just about everybody. I personally watch the show because it's humorous and well-written and because the MLP department is unique in that they interact with the fans, tolerate and even reference fan-made content (like changing the name Ditzy Doo to Derpy Hooves, at least temporarily), and (until recently, anyway) allowed full episodes to be uploaded to YouTube.
While I'm not as attached to the character as many fans are, it raises a question. MLP: FIM is (in)famous for each of the "mane" characters, in particular Pinkie Pie and Twilight Sparkle, having minor mental breakdowns, and those episodes could be seen as offensive to mentally ill people (and what about the truly psychotic pony who thought (s)he was a dog in RD's book episode?) Even Zecora can be misconstrued as being more "offensive" than Derpy/Ditzy due to her heavy African accent, the fact that the ponies shunned her, and because she is portrayed as a stereotypical shaman/voodoo priestess.

And I agree completely. I watch it because it's cute and well-written, not because I feel obligated to be obsessed with ponies. 
I think Hasbro was taking a big risk by calling her 'Derpy' in the episode, but who knew that it would get such a negative response from parents and some of the fans? And isn't it kinda hypocritical on their part? I left a comment on another picture of Ditzy/Derpy that essentially saying just that: Almost every one of the Mane Six displays SOME kind of psychotic tendency at one point or another that can be seen as much more disturbing and ideologically sensitive than a clumsy pony with lazy eye.
I just get really irritated at the majority of Bronies for bashing on Hasbro for the edit and DEMANDING that they bring Derpy back, when it was partially their fault for pressuring Hasbro to make her canon in the first place. Sending the company complaints will do absolutely nothing to help. What's done is done; Bronies just need to be grateful that she's still a character at all.

well, i think that if they'd do a derpy centric episode

but eventually accept her and become friends and so forth,
