Description
IntroductionBefore we begin this little story of mine, allow me to introduce myself and the world that I live in. My name is Selene and this story takes place when I was still twenty-three years old. I live in a world that we all call Edith. It’s a truly fascinating and amazing place. Here the skies are a beautiful shade of blue everyday, never a cloud in sight. The sun is a vibrant orange color and come nightfall when the sun is covered by a pitch black sky, a light grey moon forms overhead. The stars are the most beautiful part of it all. At night the stars can truly guide your way. With each city, the stars overhead are a different color; a color to best suit the god or goddess that is worshipped there. Well, I suppose I’m getting ahead of myself.
Here, there are three-hundred and sixty days a year. There are four seasons, spring, summer, fall, and winter. This is how we tell the time of year. There are seventy-five days in spring and fall, and there is one-hundred and five days in summer and winter. We have calendars and books to track our days. We have records back to the very beginning of our existence, which was five-thousand, eight-hundred and sixty years ago. That’s a long time, but our legends, stories, and records are well kept.
Again, I’m failing to get to the bigger, more important details.
Let me explain our ways of religion and worship. Here, our system is quite unique. You see, it’s quite easy to believe in our method of religion because our gods and goddesses are not invisible to our naked mortal eyes. In fact, each one lives in the middle of their own town where others may come to worship them. If one feels they would be better off in a specific place of worship then they are allowed to journey there and live out their life. It’s really rather simple, I think. I have spent my entire life at the heart of Righel city. Here, the God of War (Lord Cillian) lived out his days. I have dedicated my years to being one of the greatest warriors, protecting that very city with my entire being.
Let me tell you more about the different people I have encountered over my years. There are three gods and three goddesses that stay living amongst the mortals (the good ones, I might add). Four of these gods and goddesses were the original protectors sent down by the Almighty God Amon himself. Later on, two more were sent for more help in keeping the world together. Amon is a mystery to most, he is rarely ever seen and when he is it is a great honor. He lives somewhere unknown to all, but somehow knows when he is needed. He arrives only when it is absolutely necessary (for the most part). He is the one that brought me to the city of Righel when I was just a baby, but we’ll get to that in the story.
Before we begin all of that, I must tell you of the evil that there were stories… well, rumors of. There are a few legends that say that long ago, a man named Aloysius had had the ability to fool the very gods and goddesses around us. He managed to convince them all, even the Almighty, that he was devoted to his religion. No one realized that he practiced an ancient evil art that the Damned used. Before long, he had convinced Amon that another god could be used to help the others. Yet the very second he received those powers, everything took a turn for the worst.
Immediately, they all realized that they had made a terrible mistake. Evil practically poured off of his very flesh, emanating from his every movement. Slowly all of the Damned had begun to follow him, worship him even. It is even said he has his own temple at the end of The Pure River.
Or so they say.
Anyway, there are a few classifications often used amongst the mortals that I’d like to tell you about. The main three are the exiled, the Damned, and the Dead.
The Exiled are a sad group of mortals that have been banished from the cities they once lived in. They have been told to leave for reasons of great crime, or something of that general nature. They’re a barbaric set of individuals and most of them live a little ways beyond the walls of the cities that they were kicked out of.
The Damned is also a nasty group of wretched fiends. These are the heretics of the bunch. They are the very scoundrels that went against our own religion. It is said that some have been ‘blessed’ with magical gifts by this horrible Aloysius. Most of these monsters also take shelter not far from the city walls.
Now the last, and certainly the most troublesome, are the Dead. Their term is quite self-explanatory. They live in The Land of the Dead, which resides between the city of Altair and Adrahara. These demons are horrid, and very jealous of all living creatures. It’s difficult to pass through this place at night without some sort of protection to keep you alive.
So now, with all of that said you may now better understand my tale. If I’ve managed to grab hold of your attention then please stay a little while longer. Read my story, I promise I’ll tell it well.
