The sketchy-ness of this piece has an air of odd serenity, yet has a touch of roughness. The cigarette and coffee, in my eyes, represents a mundane simple life, but the heart on the mug seems to sympolize a warmth or comfort. The face, especially the eyes gives me a sense of emptiness. It seems to entwine itself with the mundane-ness given off by the coffee and cigarette. They eyes seems to be completely empty, but the hair adds a flair to the piece that I think is required for the piece to be pulled together. The flash of wild red gives a sign of life, showing that perhaps this ladies life isnt as mundane as her eyes make it seem. Like there's almost a fire burning that wants to burn through her boring day to day life and start something new and exciting.

There is a mundane spookiness about this piece. The figure has a deadness to her appearance, yet she is engaged in the very mundane activities of drinking coffee and smoking. This is perhaps where the significance of this piece lies, as a comment on how we are zombie-like slaves to caffeine. Is this too where the cigarette comes in? Is it a comment on the addictiveness of coffee and its ability to hold us hostage on a daily basis. (myself included)
I am not quite sure where the stylized sword in the upper right hand corner fits in though. A comment on coffee as a double edge sword perhaps? If that is the case why has it been drawn in this way. It seems far removed from the style of the rest of the painting. Also there are two blue strokes at the top of the image that, to me anyway, stand out a little too much. These distract somewhat from the image.
