imnotsana In reply to Shen-fn-Woo [2012-02-05 12:11:02 +0000 UTC]

I love how people use no offense with an offensive statement

A critique would've been more helpful.. what about the concept/execution did you not like? Also, FAQ #873: What do I do when I disapprove of a Daily Deviation feature?

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

Shen-fn-Woo In reply to imnotsana [2012-02-05 15:04:05 +0000 UTC]

The only thing that may be considered offensive about what I said is the terminology I used, "wierdest shit". I'll say right now that I refer to anything and everything as shit, even my own shit. With that explained, take that as you will, I am not responsible for what goes on in your head after I cleared it up for you.

I decided it was weird because of it being a simple picture against a white background, the type that has earned my gallery and most other user that I know no kind of audience whatsoever. I was not complaining about it, though it may sound like it now due to my feeling I should have to say something after your little comment. Reading the FAQ, I couldn't care less if it seems disrespectful to the artist, they have a hide comment/block button that they can freely choose to use. And to hell with critique. DA and sometimes the internet act like everyone's obligated to help each other, and barring that, at least say ONLY positive stuff. Well, you know what? Fuck that. I'll say what I want anyway. So.... *turns to artist* You took a picture of a rubix cube with a white background, I feel it weird that someone DD'ed it. I'd much rather they DD'ed your other better pictures with the cats/kittens in it. *Turns back to you* If they decide to take that as an insult to their mother, rather than a statement taking note of the unfairness of networkwide reception, then "OH....fuckin.... well."

imnotsana In reply to Shen-fn-Woo [2012-02-05 17:10:34 +0000 UTC]

Hey don't get me wrong, I respect your difference of opinion.. I just wish you had stated it properly with reasons. I wasn't asking you to give a 500 word critique, but it was unnecessary to leave that kind of remark without saying why it's "weird shit" seeing as how the artist didn't ask for the DD. The least you could've done was just say "I find this too simple" in your previous statement instead.. And alright yeah, it's a plain picture but I personally prefer the simple white background since it lets you focus on the rubix cube. As opposed to a fancy photoshopped background, that would take your attention away from the main concept, since well.. this is a conceptual piece after all But anyway, each to their own. You prefer seeings kittens, I prefer a good concept with simple backgrounds

Shen-fn-Woo In reply to imnotsana [2012-02-05 17:21:11 +0000 UTC]

Well that's understandable, and yeah I did consider it's not their fault someone suggested it. Problem is, A DD becomes a catch 22 if a person like me has anything negative to say about it. I may have acted with too much haste, but in this case I felt it was too obvious to need to say anything more than what I did, and that the artist wouldn't mind what I said much because there was so little to say from me.

Topicality In reply to Shen-fn-Woo [2012-02-05 16:00:39 +0000 UTC]

You aren't obliged to be positive at all there's no desire for that- you can go to 500x for that stuff . It's actually good to be truthful on deviantart. But it's better to explain why something didn't work in a mature manner so that the artist understands and can see if that perspective makes sense and if they could learn from what they created. It's sort of like when someone simply comments "oh cool"! While it's a positive statement, the reader doesn't know why it is "cool" one can assume. Your simple remark then was simply perceived as negative with no reinforcement, so therefore one can assume in that situation. I mean, wouldn't you want to know why your artwork seemed to suck so you can improve on it? It's simply sensible, am I wrong at all?

Shen-fn-Woo In reply to Topicality [2012-02-05 16:54:20 +0000 UTC]

This is a better comment worth replying to than the other two put forth. I'll explain myself:

When I hear people talk about my artwork, I take into account what they're saying and put that which was said into two categories: A.) Critique, something that tells me what I did wrong/right, and B.) Reception, the person's personal opinion on the piece of artwork. Both can be used, just one is normally desired more than the other. While critique may help you improve, reception lets you know how people are taking your ideas. It seems useless yes, but what's useless about knowing what people like or dislike? You can easily go to the user's page and find out what they do like, and see if it's popular among more people, or different crowds of people, etc. Thus you are actually still using their opinion to "better" yourself. Whether you discard their feelings or not is up to you, but by far is there nothing useless about anything someone says unless they're coming to your page to threaten you (which actually has it's own uses, because now you know there's a crazy freak out there trying to hurt you).

Technically, there is no such thing as a useless comment, and anyone trying to say otherwise is attempting to force you to do something to their own or someone else's benefit. It's selfish. I will not indulge that. As there are no rules stating that you are obligated to help others (I wouldn't adhere even if there were), anyone acting like I am will find a nice surprise in the form of a negativity laced reply.

Hope that explains it for you. It's not that I don't like the deviation here, it's got nice clarity, and I mistook it for a 3D model at first, because it was so clean, but I don't find it DD material. Had no one said anything else, I wouldn't even be talking right now on this person's page.

Topicality In reply to Shen-fn-Woo [2012-02-05 17:04:48 +0000 UTC]

Well yes that's very true, a single comment such as that is like stating in general what you perceive about that picture, that's fine. No comment is in essence worth nothing in value. Such simple comments can reflect overall what you think of the image, it's just the artist's curiosity to know why that drives the responses you have been getting. In no way was your comment threatening, it was merely interesting because you didn't say why and I know that I personally would be curious as to your own opinions regarding it.

We're just curious individuals ah well .

I've got no problem with that. It's just that internet culture in general has started pissing me off. One must "contribute" merely for signing up, as if drafted for war or something. I'm only here for my own interests, so if people want anything out of me, they can ask for it, not demand it, is how I feel.

Oh, and something I forgot to mention. I like how in the FAQ it says to message this one person your disaproval of the DD, but if it's not violating rules, then it won't get taken down. It's like saying "Feel free to waste your time talking to someone who has nothing to do with the picture, the artist of the picture or the suggester, and will most likely do nothing other than (maybe) comfort your useless opinion."

jvsef In reply to Shen-fn-Woo [2012-02-05 16:05:04 +0000 UTC]

No, your statement is not directly insulting the artist, but if it wasn't indirectly aimed at this deviation, then you should have put it in a Journal. Get over it.

Also, `admx most likely did not receive a DD on one of his other deviations because this, while it is simple, is a very original piece, instead of kittens which are everywhere. Seriously, use your brain, it's not that hard to figure out. DDs mean something, it's not just a way to show off more of what everyone has seen. They're to promote creative and original art.

Yes, the FAQ says to contact $Moonbeam13 . She's the head of Community Relations, which is the whole volunteer team that sets these DDs. No, she will not take it down because your opinion doesn't really matter in the setting of DDs. The point of talking to her about it is for her to explain, in length, why you can or cannot do certain things when it comes to DDs. She gets paid to do this among other things, do you really think that she would be hired to waste your time?

P.S., Not everything is supposed to be positive, at least not on deviantART. However, if you're not going to say anything constructive to the artist, which they could use to help make their deviations better, then get out. Don't just show your negativity, but help the artist understand why you feel a certain way towards their art and give them tips or tricks.

"then you should have put it in a Journal. Get over it."

Um no. There's a comment box for a reason. "Use your brain".

"while it is simple, is a very original piece, instead of kittens which are everywhere."

You can find random objects against white backgrounds on ebay or google image search quite commonly.

do you really think that she would be hired to waste your time?

Read between the lines of what DA is telling you - they don't want you berating or negatively judging a DD on the deviation's page (as if it's something more than just a deviation after it gets DD'ed), so if you have anything negative to say, voice it to this person PRIVATELY where the best they can do is take note of it and do NOTHING. Yeah, I'd consider that a waste of my flippin time. Whether or not she's getting paid to do it is irellevant.

"if you're not going to say anything constructive to the artist, which they could use to help make their deviations better, then get out."

You don't give me orders, kid. You don't own the site, nor are you it's spokesperson. I'll help when I feel like it, not because the community feels like I should. Anyway, seeing as you've yet to provide a decent rebuttal, I'll disregard anything you have to say from here on out. You want to continue this? Feel free to come to my page and bitch me out.

The comment box is not supposed to bee used to insult the artist.

Also, I agree, about the objects on white backgrounds on eBay, but those aren't really art pieces.

Well, I understand what you mean with wasting your time. I guess that nobody really wants negative comments on their deviations.

I also realize that I may have been harsh with my comment, and I apologize for that. However, I agree with =Topicality here: "Your simple remark then was simply perceived as negative with no reinforcement, so therefore one can assume in that situation. I mean, wouldn't you want to know why your artwork seemed to suck so you can improve on it? It's simply sensible, am I wrong at all?"

But I didn't.

One could argue that they are if they uploaded it to DA.

Well yeah, I just responded to them, which was before this post so ignore any negativity directed at you since you're disarming too. Hopefully that clears things up for you. Again, there's nothing against the artist here, and excuse my wordings, as I shitpost daily and use a lot of slang. To be honest, if anyone DD'ed something in my gallery I'd react the same way "how did this shit make DD?"
