I imagine that this character is its own power source, but when it exerts too much energy on emotion (being inconsolably sad, angry, or even happy), it's body goes into emergency power-save mode, effectively shutting down the organism to charge for a long period of time. During this time, certain plants like flowers and fungi grow on the fur, especially the shoulders. When the organism awakes from this slumber, it will shake off most of the plants and they will scatter, leaving a short trail as it walks, though sometimes a few flowers and fungi are grown too deep into the fur and stick around until they wilt.
