Description
Lore:
The Necropotent Grimoire is an unholy artifact, its origins shrouded in the darkest annals of necromantic lore. It is whispered that the grimoire was crafted from the flayed skin of a powerful lich, imbued with the essence of countless tortured souls through unspeakable rituals of suffering and sacrifice.
The grimoire's covers are adorned with twisted runes and sigils that seem to writhe and pulse with an unholy energy, as if alive. Its pages are filled with profane incantations and rituals that grant mastery over the forces of undeath and the power to command the restless dead.
Properties of the Necropotent Grimoire:
Undying Servitude: The grimoire's wielder can cast the animate dead spell without expending a spell slot, once per long rest. However, the undead remain bound to the caster's will for only a limited time.
Necrotic Eruption: Through a profane ritual, the user can unleash a wave of necrotic energy, dealing massive damage to all living creatures within a specified area and raising them as undead thralls under the caster's control.
Master of the Undying: The bearer gains proficiency in the Intimidation skill and advantage on saving throws against being frightened or effects that cause fear.
Curse of the Necropotent Grimoire:
Unholy Corruption: Each time a ritual is performed using the grimoire, the user's body is slowly corrupted by necrotic energies. They must succeed on a DC 20 Constitution saving throw or gain a level of exhaustion that cannot be removed until the next dawn.
Insatiable Hunger for Power: After delving into the grimoire's secrets, the user develops an insatiable hunger for power over life and death. They must pass a DC 22 Wisdom saving throw or become obsessed with studying the grimoire, ignoring all other activities, including eating and sleeping.
Lich's Vengeance: The bound essence of the lich seeks to escape its prison by possessing the user's body. The lich may attempt to influence or torment the user through nightmarish visions, whispers from the dead, or by manipulating the user's undead servants.
Use in Campaign:
The Necropotent Grimoire could be the centerpiece of a campaign delving into the darkest depths of necromancy and the dangers of tampering with the forces of undeath. Its discovery could set the party on a path of unraveling a sinister cult's plans to unleash a devastating undead scourge upon the world. Alternatively, a reckless wizard or warlock could stumble upon the grimoire, unleashing its corrupting influence and drawing the attention of the bound lich's essence.
Possessing or using the grimoire could lead to harrowing encounters with undead horrors, eerie phenomena, and the ever-present risk of succumbing to the lure of power over life and death at the cost of one's soul. The party must grapple with the temptation of mastering necromancy versus the potential corruption and dangers posed by the grimoire's curse, creating rich roleplaying opportunities and moral dilemmas.
