Guide and Frequently Asked Questions about "Adoptables"
This information is meant to be a completely informative resource. The visual examples are made by AdoptDesignHub Admins, and any questions you have should be commented below so they can be added here.

Q: What are "Adoptables"
A: Adoptables can be defined as 'any specific design/character/creation made with the intention of allowing any further development to be taken on by another party.' Meaning, adoptables are ideas and concepts for sale. A client can purchase the 'idea' to use for their own purposes.
Quote from paexiedust 's ToS - "Adoptables are purchased designs which you can use to make your own character. You may name the character, create a personality and background information for the character as well as make minor design changes. However you may not edit/alter the original art for the design, the world, or guidelines of the species you have purchased in any way. "

Q: What are the rules for selling adoptables?
A: To sell any design/adoptable, you must realize that it needs to fall into one of these two brackets.
1: Design must be 100% completely designed by you.Meaning, the idea, sketch, lines, color, shade, design, concept would have all been done entirely by yourself. or2: Design must be mostly yours, with anyone else's contribution credited with a link and with their permission. Meaning, if you have a great idea for a wolf with stars on its tail, and neon green ears, but you can't draw a wolf; you have the option of finding a pre-made line-art to color in. Once you find some lines though, by using them for your adopt, you are bound by the line-artist's rules! The same goes for bases and any other help resources.
-Keep in mind, even if the line-artist does not require credit, by using someone elses resource in your own gallery, you are required to credit them with a link!

Q: What are the rules for buying adoptables?
A: Each artist can add or change their own rules depending on how they like to operate. However, there are some cardinal adopt rules that should always be followed.

- You buy the design not the art. You are not purchasing the right to upload the adopt to your own gallery, your gallery is only for art you created. You can upload your own drawings of your new buddy.

- You should always credit the original creator of the adopt; when re-drawing your character, when writing about them, ect.

- Credit should always be given in the form of a link. [ :devUSERNAME: ] or [ :iconUSERNAME: ] or [ http://LINK.com/ ]

- By buying any adopt from anyone you are agreeing to their individual rules as well.

Art and Design theft is a Big Deal. Don't be that guy.

Q: What are Eggs/Hatchables/Mystery Adopts?
A: Eggs, Hatchables and Mystery Adopts are design concepts that you can adopt before you see the actual finished product.

Eggs: Eggs are usually actual images of eggs, usually with defining features, like stripes or even protrusions like horns or auras. Eggs are normally hatched by the original artist, and the creature inside then automatically belongs to the person who bought the egg.

Mystery Adopts:These usually are finished designs, that are blacked out or hidden somehow from the buyers. After they are bought, the design is revealed.

Hatchables: Hatchables are generally eggs, that the buyer will have to hatch and draw their own idea of what was inside, without the original artist's help.

The main selling point of these types of adopts, is the mystery and the excitement in waiting to see what you bought.

Q: What are Auctions?
A: Auctions are a specific type of adoptable sale. The concept of buying the design is the same as any other adopt, except these ones do not have a set price. They are most popular with well established artists with a large follower base. Without many followers, the adopt would sit, un-bid on for possibly a long time.
ex. :thumb749670225:

It is important to read the entire description of any auction, to find out exactly how that artist wants you to bid. Normally they prefer to keep them in a "reply-chain". Meaning, you must reply with your bid, to the highest bidder's comment.

Auctions always have a "end point". These can vary depending on the artist, or that specific auction. Different types of end points are;

-Set Time Amount (e.g. Auction ends in exactly 24 hours)
-Set Date (e.g. Auction ends on March 30th at 4pm EST)
-Set Time after Bid (e.g. Auction ends 5 hours after highest bid) [That means, every time someone bids, it resets the countdown to 5 hours, if bidding is fast, this kind can go on for a long time.)
-Set Cap Amount (e.g. Auction ends if bidding reaches $60, but you can not AB at $60) [This insures a lot of traffic to the page for a while.]

Q: What are Customs?
A: Customs are exactly what they sound like, customized adoptables. To get a custom adopt, you will normally send the artist who is offering them, a note or email, with specific details about what you want the adopt to look like. These can be very precise, or very vague.

PYOP or Pick Your Own Palette are another example of Custom adopts, where you pick a color palette for the artist to finish the adopt with.

Q: How do Linearts and Bases work?
A: Linearts are much simpler than Bases, and are more popular, so I'll address them first.

Linearts are usually black lines, on a transparent background. To use, you save the image, or download the package, and open the Lineart in a art program. Good programs to use for this are Photoshop, or SAI. A free alternative would be Paint.Net, however it is not as nice as PSD or SAI. A last resort would be GIMP.

In any of these programs, you will see a list of Layers.
Make a new layer UNDER the lineart layer, and color it!
There are many advanced ways of doing this, here are some more in-depth tutorials about doing this, and bases.

Q: What are breedables?
A: Breedables are adopts that, instead of buying the creature shown, you have the ability to pay the Artist to "breed" the character with one of your own, or even one of your selections from a batch somewhere. This will buy you a certain amount of the offspring of that pairing.

Q: What are Draw To Adopt & Offer To Adopt?
A: Draw to Adopt, or DTA, is a type of adopting contest, where a character will be gifted to whoever can draw it the best/nicest. Each DTA contest is judged by the original adopt artist, and they can choose how to judge each one on their own. Normally they will chose the person who shows, through their DTA Entry, that they really love the adopt, and will give it a "good home".While Offer to adopt is a collection of Adopts where you could "offer" Points / Money / Art / Core membership in exchange for the adopt.
ex.

Q: What are Doll makers?
A: Doll Makers are generators, usually FLASH games, that allow a person to click and select options for a premade character design. Examples are Chibi Maker 1.1 & Doll Divines
It is very important to understand that the art done for these games is NOT YOURS, and it is very controversial to upload such things to your dA gallery, as it is not your art. Discussion about such things can become very hostile, as for this group though, we will not accept any Maker Adopts.

Q: What are Trademarked Adopts?
A: This are adopt based from any fandom (TV shows / Movies / Bands / Books / etc.) that are copyright material.

"I don't like the amount of Deviation notifications! How can I fix this without leaving?"

Please don't leave the group because of the notifications. They come as a single stack that can be deleted, but this is how to turn them off: Click the green "Watching" button you can find at the top of the group page, uncheck the box that says Deviations, and click Save.
