All I can think of is that SNL/Lonely Island's Music video spoof called "threw it on the ground."

have you thought about using a vid cam and taking stills in sequence before? a la Muybridge?

AdorkaStock In reply to hobzart [2013-10-11 00:20:07 +0000 UTC]
I don't have that kind of equipment but people have suggested it in the past. would be fun! It would have to be some pretty high res, high frame rate stuff to be able to separate out the stills.

I notice three things that can make it static, just on your part: 1) back/legs. I could imagine more bending at the knees (top right is good) or arching back a bunch, especially when your hands are at the highest point they'll go... 2) neck. Especially if you arched your back, it'd be good to throw your head back, to give that whole EFF THIS! effect to it. 3) angle. I think a couple of these one-handed flips would look a lot neater if it was at a 45-degree angle from where it is now (or even like 75-degree, just to where the table isn't obscuring too much) - you'd get a better sense of the action if it's being done somewhat "toward" the viewere.
And honestly, I get the feeling that there are some better possible captures you could have gotten from these, but you just didn't snap the camera at the best moment. Do you use action cams to take 20-25 pictures in succession? You might consider it when doing actions like this.

I leave all that fancy timing stuff up to the photographer xD I barely know how to use a camera
It's a little weird working with a professional photographer sometimes because they are always looking for a "good photo" and sometimes a good reference isn't necessarily a good photo. We have these discussions like "well, I can't see your face" and I'm like, "That's okay, really it is." xD So when I try to do anything that obscures me, they seem to get confused.
I was crouching to flip it, but Marcus was catching the height of the action when I'd already typically extended myself. I was actually jumping in some of these; I was throwing it as hard as I could, so it's interesting that it doesn't always translate. But now that I see the results I have some ideas about how to fake it if I do this again.

haha also that was the first one we did I think and the photographer noticed it covered my face (something photographers HATE even though as a reference sometimes you need that) so we decided to do it one hand afterwards.
