Description A group of visitors at the maltravieso cave in Spain discovered something strange. A tour group consisting of two families, one family of four and one of three, entered the cave on a guided tour of the cave paintings. Reportedly, two of the children became separated from their families and ran deeper into the cave that they were allowed to. They were found, uninjured, deep in the cave next to a previously uncharted pathway. The pathway was far too small for the children to enter, only being about six inches in diameter, but rock formations suggested that it was previously much larger and had caved in. Thinking that there could be something of historical value further in, an excavation of the entrance to this new chamber was commissioned by the Spanish government. The excavation was completed last night and what was found within the chamber was shocking. A new cave painting was discovered, almost encompassing the entire wall of the chamber. Experts have dated this painting to at least 150,000 years old, easily making it the oldest cave painting ever discovered. What’s strange about this painting is the detail in it, particularly in the sky above. It is believed that this is a depiction of some ritual sacrifice to some, as of now, unknown deity. Experts also identified many artifacts within the chamber such as totems, weapons, and a partially collapsed altar with various remains surrounding it. We believe that this chamber was used as some sort of ritual chamber where animals, and possibly humans, would be sacrificed and offerings would be made to whatever deity is depicted in the painting. While it is not uncommon to find religious iconography from this period, the discovery of an unknown ritual practice and a never-before seen ancient deity make this, perhaps, one of the most significant archaeological discoveries in decades. A group of American researchers has reached out to us to help us catalog these discoveries, and we will be grateful for their help.
