This is a 'Culture Ship name' of my own invention. The Culture has space ships that can connect with the 'energy grid' either above or below 'real space' and move through the latter at hyperlight velocities. The passage of ships and their acceleration or deceleration can leave perceptible wakes and ripples in the energy grid. I've just been re-reading The Excession* by Iain M. Banks which is almost entirely about Culture Ships and their reaction to something even they don't understand; a massless volume of fractal darkness that can apparently connect to the energy grid above and below real space simultaneously. It has appeared once before. They call it 'the excession' and the signs are that Special Circumstances may have been anticipating the trouble that its reappearance going to cause, while the 'Affront' may be plotting to take advantage of whatever situation arises.
Of course, Culture ships usually carry human beings so some humans are inevitably involved in some of the most abstruse shennanigans that the Culture has ever been up to, investigating a true 'outside context problem'.
