CW: Violence, blighting of a kit

16/1042 Acorns

Nimbus had always been a sickly kit; he didn't need a blight to drain his energy. He already lived in a deficit. But he had finally found a reprieve in the varied, odd, and wonderful folk of the Cryptid Village. They had provided a soft and quiet place to rest, a silent and comforting compaignonship, as well as a lovely pet rock to keep him company. In the months since he joined, Nimbus had quickly told his siblings Sugar and Gold about his moving to the village. The two visiting him once a week, checking up on him and keeping him company; as the three had done since the start. During the Hootenanny however Nimbus didn't expect either to come visit him and didn't mind it. As the isolated Sugar had finally found friends; thier phylacardia's color driving other kits away out of fear. Gold was also enjoying the years festivities as e set off to claim candy as the reward for eir many pranks. It was a great shock to him when his rest was suddenly ripped away from him. As his anter was yanked up from the pillows that cradled him, he was stunned by the face of the folk gripping him. The face of his sibling Sugar, but something was very wrong as thier kind and soft expression was twisted with cruelty. The fake shoved his head down into his pillows; he heard crashing about his little room. Once the crashing stopped and he couldn't feel or hear the fake, he lifted his head up slowly; gasping for air he glanced around at the destroyed room. But he couldn't waste time here, as he felt his instinct rise. He had to find his siblings, he had to make sure they were ok.

Getting up to her four paws, she padded out of the village. The place was practically empty, as the cryptids were out enjoying the feativities. Nimbus went as fast as she could, but kept a steady pace; knowing that to overexert herself would put both her and her siblings in danger. As she emerged into the hallways of the den, she heard the echoed voices of kit's laughter. She did her best to follow them for a change, usually avoiding the everyday commotion of the den; she sought it out in an attempt to find her siblings. Arriving at one of the main living/playroom of the den, she was shocked to see it empty. Usually folk of all kinds frequented the space. But today the den was eerily vacant. Yet the sounds of folk could be heard through out the halls and rooms. Nimbus was very confused, not understanding what the situation was and fearing the worse. Till a adult folk dressed up in a vendetta black costume ran down a hall way in front of Nimbus. Dozens kits chased after them; as they retreated down the hallway she saw a kit jump up and rip some small pouch off the costume. As they did, candy went flying; some kits scrambled to get a piece, while the rest kept after the dressed up folk. Shaking herself from her confusion, she padded over to the kits left in the hallway. She asked around for her siblings, hoping at least one of these kits had seen them. But not a single one recognized the description of Gold. On the bright side however, a few kits had seen Sugar. They were hunting down the adult folk dressed as a blue fang with thier friends. Feeling releif at the new of Sugar, but still so anxious about Gold, Nimbus set off once more. Roaming the den, asking any folk they passed about thier mischievous sibling.

Eventually he found herself at the exit/entrance of the den. Nearby in one of the smaller playrooms, that also acted as a waiting room, he saw two kits there. One was happily playing around, chattering away. While the other kit read a way too thick book, the cover indicating its contents was just math. Nimbus went on over to them, sat down to save some energy, then started to ask if they had seen his sibling Gold. The green and peppy kit answered imeaditly, at first their voice was louder than what nimbus would like. But they quickly lowered thier voice when they saw him wince in pain. "Yeah I've seen a kit like that! oh srry, yeh we saw em leav the den. Though I don't remember why or where e was headed. But why do u want to know?" "E's my sibling and e should've known better than to leave at a time like this!" Nimbus' face and voice filled with worry and frustration ad he talked about the foolish Gold. A small and soft voice chimed in, as the small kit behind them resting on a couch brought an answer. "I heard them say something about exploring becuase the adults where all distracted. As well as something about a 'forgotten district.' E seemed to be heading for Willow Valley." As they finished sharing their information, Bog looked at them with admiration. "Hehe just like my Blue to know the important things." Nimbus thanked the two and hurriedly headed to Willow Valley, a greater sense of urgency fuled his pace.

As the two kits watched the retreating figure of Nimbus, Bog wished them luck cheerfully. But Blue Moon looked out a window, towards the sky. Which was ever so slowly turning that blood red they had grown familiar with. In a soft murmmer only Bog could hear, "I predict that those two kits won't be coming back safely any time soon." Hearing this Bog's cheerful expression immediately changed to one of great worry. "Oh no, we need to warn them or tell someone, we can't just let this happen!" Xe urgently whispered to Blue Moon, who's head quietly nodded. The pair also set off on a journey of their own, back to the depths of the den to seek out help.

As Nimbus traveled through the boroughs of the Grove, she noticed the several warning posters playered to every wall. They all warned about the dangers of going out during the blood moon. The danger of the weakened wyld seal and the desperate appetite of blighted folk. A few scattered in the mix detailed a monsterous being. Dripping the bright blood of blights, it stalked and attacked folk this time of year. It was called Cualiflower, and it was extremely dangerous to go out at nitght. She bristled at the sight of the posters, and chastised Gold in her mind; how could e go out with all these blatently obvious warning signs?! But as she stood before the exit of the tree to Willow Valley she couldn't help but think that I'm no better now. As she traveled down the main road of Willow Valley she noticed how deserted and quiet the neighborhood was. Every folk was indie safe and warm. Except for two small kits approaching the Great tree where she had just left. Seeing them and the direction they came from, she called out to them hoping they could point her towards Gold. As they approached each other, the Witch kit held up a metal box on a strap draped around thier neck. As they seemingly pressed a button on the box, a bright flash stunned Nimbus for a moment. As she winced in pain and covered her eyes, she heard small and rapid paws approaching her. When she moved her paws away from her face, she was greeted with the vibrant and excited Princess. "Hey hey hey!! My name's Princesss!!! What's yours??!!" The loud voice of the small vibrating folk rattled around Nimbus' head. She pressed her drooping ears against her head and greeted the two. "My name is Nimbus and I'm looking for my sibling, have you seen them?" She glanced at princess who yelled out "NOPE!!!" and raced off towards the Great Tree. She looked hopefully towards the other folk who introduced themself as Journey and asked what Nimbus' sibling looked like. After giving the description of Gold to Journey, they responded calmly "Oh yes, I saw em going that way just a few minutes ago." As they pointed down the way, Nimbus gave a hurred thanks and started to rush forward. Wanting to get to em before anything happened, she rushed; knowing it would exhaust her. As she left the neighborhood, night began to fall, the moon began to rise in earnest, and the silhouette of Journey called out. "Good luck, you're gonna need it..."

As Nimbus entered the abandonded park, her fur stood on end. She couldn't help the shivers going down her spine. The pinprick feeling of being watched. She slowed and tried to make her way through as quiet as she could; but it was rather difficult as the fallen leaves around her, cruched beneath her four paws. But perhapse the noise she made wasn't so bad, as the creaking of metal resounded through out the park. She wanted to turn tail in flee at the sight of the impaled statues. At the strange machinery scattered about that seemed to be ancient, even older than the head librarian; who Nimbus had thought of as the oldest thing around. As the shadows grew longer and longer, she slowly padded deeper and deeper. Till the shadows all merged, and the world seemed to lighten; as golden hour had arrived.

Almost imeaditly Nimbus' eye caught onto the bright yellow fluff of his siblings pelt. He alsomt tripped forward in releaf and urgency to get to em. But as he started forward again, he saw something that stole his breath way. The golden hour, more read than it should be, revealed the driping and sparking sight of Cualiflower. Way too close for comfort, looking towards Gold. Without thinking, he rushed forward and called out to Gold. For em to "Run to me!!!" Gold look startled as eir four eyes focused to the bazaar sight of eir sickly sibling running towards em. But e actully obeyed the call, unlike the usually mischievous response to run in the opposite direction and begin a game.

E ran towards Nimbus with all the might eir little paws could muster; for only one reason. The fear that twisted on his face, and his eyes that weren't looking at Gold. As Gold almost reached Nimbus she screamed once more "Keep going!! Get help!!" Gold gasped at the screeching rouar behind them in response to Nimbus' order. E ran faster and faster, heading back the way e came; trying to reach any folk to come help eir sibling. Eir eyes teared up as e ran, knowing e was leaving her behind and alone.

As the crunching of Gold's paws in the scattered leaves faded away into the distance; Nimbus kept running forward. Cualiflower didn't stay still either. Seeing Gold run it tried to follow em. But soon it changed targets, with a roaring screech it lunged after Nimbus who had been running towards them. But Cualiflower's beak snaped shut on empty air, as Nimbus had rolled forward a bit, and then flung herself to the side.

She ran once more, this time headed towards nothing. Nimbus ran with out a destination purposefully; she couldn't go after Gold for fear e would be attacked, and she definitely couldn't go towards Cualiflower again. That had been in an effort to make sure they didn't chase after Gold. It had worked, but now Nimbus was in danger as she could feel her body slowing against her will. She felt less air fill her lungs, her limbs respond slower than she wanted. She heard the scraping of Cualiflower's claws on the partially tiled ground. She was putting in so much effort, even more than just moments ago. But her body just couldn't keep up, as she felt the heavy breath and splattering of viscous blood(?) on her tail.

Cualiflower lunges their head forward to bite down on Nimbus. But empty air greets their beak once more, as Nimbus assends upwards. Her small wings that shimmer as the night sky above, flap rapidly. Propelling herself upwards, Nimbus feels her spirits sour as her body ascends out of the beast's reach.

But all too soon, he feels the air below him rushing back up; as he felt the sharp pain of a serrated beak clamped onto his trailing tail. He didn't know that Cualiflower could jump so high. As his body was pulled down, so was his hope.

Come morning time, adult folk finally found the unconscious fluffy body of Nimbus. She was covered in orange blood and scratch marks. Exhausted and stress, but alive.
