Description James Jones (author of From Here to Eternity and The Thin Red Line, among others) once fronted the opinion that American as a civilization had produced exactly three articles which most phenomenally showcased a combination Yankee ingenuity and enduring beauty - the ax handle, the Clipper ship, and the 1903 Springfield.

Though reduced in popular nomenclature to 'Springfield', the '03 was also built in lesser numbers by Remington and Rock Island Arsenal (not to be confused with the Filipino manufacturer of the present day). First sent abroad to Mexico with Black Jack Pershing's 1916 punitive expedition, the '03 family hung on as frontline combat rifles into Korea (as the 1903A4 sniper variant) and saw limited U.S. use into Viet Nam despite the presence of the M1C and M1D series.
