It's a very good shot.
Yes, it's odd behaviour for a Mallard, however that doesn't apply to all species of ducks.
The Wood Duck (Aix sponsa) for example has significant claws on it's webbed feet & can often be seen off the ground on tree branches.
They use abandoned holes of large woodpeckers & tree/pole mounted nesting boxes.

Wow, that shot is really unusual. You are right ducks normaly do not search out high places. Lucky dog to take such a pic
