Acrylic painting on thick aluminum sheet

7 1/2 inches tall, 5 1/8 inches wide
Including the beaded wire: about 10 inches tall

A scrap of aluminum left over from a larger piece was hand cut and smoothed into a funky blob by my design partner Gepre. After cleaning and priming the metal I take it and begin my painting process, this one was part of a small batch of paintings I created similar style psychedelic backgrounds for before choosing my imagery.

I really liked how this background turned out, and after painting my moss planets, which obscured the patterns, I wanted to make one piece transparent and mostly linework. I used fine point paint pens for most of the art, and went through with light washes of color to enhance and shade without going opaque.

In a regular painting I paint what I want and if I decide later to add new elements it's easy to layer them in. But Pond Princess needed to remain translucent, so I lightly sketched out the whole composition in pencil and chalk beforehand. I almost never plan my artwork this way and it turned out really well, I practiced in my sketchbook before committing to the metal.

Holes for the wire hanging were drilled after the painting was finished, I was in a bit of a bead-zone and I think they enhance the composition in a really whimsical way.
