he didn't treat them like shit. my interpretation is that either: Tenzin just had so much presure on him continuing an entire race that aang just gave him a little more Β rewards then the other because he had to work harder or, Aang and tenzin where traveling around a lot (same reason as earlier, to teach him the ways of the airnomads) and just got distracted by lets say elephant koi

Yeah... I heard that. Β I won't watch Korra. Β Will not do it. Β I don't like that they basically turned our hero into an ass. Β And they even killed him off VERY young for an avatar - considering that Kyoshi was over 200 when she died and avatars tended to live longer than the average human - just so they could bring in their new series and make MILLIONS more dollars by doing so. Β If you think about it, if the spirit water supposedly healed Aang's body of all the damage that had been done to it when Azula killed him and it brought him back to life, then that should have taken care of any damage being frozen had done to him. Β PLOTHOLE! Β Seriously, I just think they betrayed ATLA fans and particularly Aang fans with Korra's storyline, and in more ways than one.

Yeah, it is very sad, especially when you consider that Aang never got to know any of his grandchildren. Not fair.

I like to think that Kya and Bumi exaggerated Aang's favoritism, if only because it helps me feel better about the whole situation. I can understand Aang showing a little bit of favoritism toward Tenzin as the only other Airbender, but he was so accepting of everyone that I can't believe he would pretend his other two kids didn't exist. Plus, didn't it ever occur to him that his non-airbender children could still have Airbender babies, at least in theory? So it would be worth exposing them to his culture too.

Yes, but Aang didn't expose Kya and Bumi to his culture. Which is stupid of the writers of Korra.

Come to think of it, Aang is a kickass hero but a lousy father....but that's only one way to view it.
On the other hand, Aang WAS the Last Airbender. So the moment Tenzin was born it'll be up to him to make sure that the art of airbending will continue and so that the next Avatar will be able to bend ALL four elements to keep balance in the bending world. So technically, Aang had a good reason to focus mainly on raising Tenzin, no matter how much of a douche dad he appeared to be. Β

Focusing on Tenzin doesn't mean completely ignoring his other two kids. IMHO.

It did seem really out of character when it was described that Aang hardly took notice of his two eldest children and it seemed unrealistic as well. I like to believe that Aang would have loved his children to pieces, regardless of who was a bender and who was not because that just seemed more in his nature.

thatguy999 [2014-06-22 20:38:13 +0000 UTC]
I wouldn't call it justified but it is understandable why Aang wasn't a perfect father when you consider a few things:
1.Β Before Tenzin was born Aang was literally the last airbender
2.Β Aang knew that when he died it would all be on Tenzin to ensure that the art of Airbending survived
3.Β If Airbending did not survive then all future Avatars would be unable to become fully realized and would be far less effective and would likely cause problems with the cycle of reincarnation.
4.Β Being the avatar isn't exactly a 9:00-5:00 job so even if the world reached some level or relative peace he likely only had so much time he could spend with his family.
All that aside he was apparently good enough that Kya and Bumi still loved him though there were some issues that hadn't been resolved when died.Β He at least wasn't anywhere near as bad as say Azulon, Hiroshi Sato, Unalaq, Yakone, or Ozai.Β

I'm not saying he wasn't supposed to spend more time with Tenzin than with K and B for above mentioned reasons. I understand that. But the fact that he never ever took K and B on holidays, not even to show them where their old dad grew up... now that just sounds stupid and unbelievable.

Wait, really? I know it was mentioned in the series that Aang kinda preferred Tenzin but does it actually say that stuff too? o:

AgiVega In reply to LynKofWinds [2014-06-24 19:55:19 +0000 UTC]
Apparently Aang not only favoured Tenzin a bit, but a lot. He took Tenzin on various vacations and left Kya and Bumi always behind. He never even showed K and B any of the air temples, Ember Island or Kyoshi (only to Tenzin) and very likely didn't mention his two non-bender kids to the Air Acolytes either, because there is a scene in Korra season two in which an Air Acolyte thinks K and B (when they finally, for the first time! visit the Southern Air Temple with Tenzin) are Tenzin's servants. When Bumi says they are Tenzin's brother and sister, the Air Acolyte says "did Avatar Aang have more kids? Are there more airbenders?" And Bumi and Kya say dejectedly: "we are not airbenders". That was a powerful and very sad scene.

I agree with what you said, I can't get over the way LOK displays Aang as a Father. Doesn't really make sense. It seems very Out Of Character for him.
And this kinda reminds me of someone elses picture they did touching on how the writers made him seem like a bad Father... I like people who point this out to come to Aang's defense.

Honestly, calm down. A few pent up sentences said during anger and frustration does not equate to how Aang raised and loved his kids. There could be other reasons why he didn't take Kya and Bumi. School? Too dangerous handling three kids alone if Katara has duties to attend to in Republic City?
People change as they grow up. You saw how serious Aang was when he talked to Toph in the flashback in one of the episodes. But that does not mean he treated his children like crap. People are reading waaaay too much into what Kya and Bumi said. My parents stained my glass too and sometimes abused me emotionally but I can never hate them. Every parent stains their kid's glass, even a seeming "good" person too. Both brother and sister love their dad dearly or they wouldn't have been looking at their family picture with fondness.

Aang in my head is and always will be a good person. It's the writers of Korra who I'm really angry at. Besides, your reasoning as to why Aang didn't take K and B anywhere sounds logical to a point. But it doesn't sound logical if you think that he never ever took them anywhere. He could surely have arranged his things so that he could take them on journeys, at least a couple of times. You know: if there's a will, there's a way.

Uhh... the writers of Korra are the creators (and have written) for ATLA too. I think people are too attached to ATLA and judge TLOK with comparisons to the original series. TLOK should be judged on its own.
This is The Legend of KORRA, not the Tales of Aang & Katara as they start and raise a family. There's more to this show than romance, politics, and how some famous person's children grew up. This show is about Korra. She has grown so much since Book 1. I urge you to watch till the end of Book 2 where she really matures. Book 3 starts next week and I can't wait to see what happens next.
But frankly, if a show really frustrates and angsts you so much, maybe you should stop watching it and channel your energy into something you like which will lead to a positive outcome instead of being angry/sad over fictional characters?

I've seen the whole of season 2 and didn't like it much. I'm hopeful that season 3 will be better. And honestly, I don't really care for Korra's character. She's okay, I don't have problems with her, but I couldn't say I like her. She's neutral to me. I'm watching the show for Aang's descendants, and in that department I've seen good and bad too. I like Tenzin and a his kids a lot, for example. They are all so adorable.

If you expect that, then prepare to be disappointed. Like I said earlier, it is the Legend of KORRA. Not the Tales of Aang's spawn.
I just watch TLOK as it is with no expectations.

Season one didn't disappoint me in the "Aang's spawn" respect, it was fine. Season two did a bit. I'm not expecting the series to feature Aang's family as the main characters, it obviously cannot, but I love seeing them around. Is that a problem? I don't think so.

Include the fact those two kids were named after someone beloved to Aang & Katara, it's like adding salt to a festering wound. Plus, I don't see how OR WHY they never had a chance to see Kyoshi Island & Ember Island with their father.

Yeah, exactly. But even if Aang didn't take them to these islands, why wouldn't he at least take them to the Southern Air Temple to show them where their old dad grew up? Doesn't make sense to me.

I think the bigger question is why Katara didn't nag him about it earlier - given the fact she played the "mother" of the GAang.

In truth, Aang was a workaholic, spending a lot of nights thinking about his family just like his father-in-law, Hakoda.
