Actually your problem is not cause by reading in that case. Reading in dim light causes eye strain, which will go away. But if you have issues with your eyes, the symptoms are very similar to eye strain.
While some theorize it could cause nearsightness, this would only happen if extensive reading in dim light is done in the first ten years of life, when the eyes are still developing. Adults would be completely unaffected. And ofcourse genetics seem to play a role.

Yes, And I agree that genetics are a main cause in poor eyesight.
The reading can hurt your eyes comment seemed to apply to my sister, who reads book all day everyday. And now has glasses. But does not apply to my brother, who hardly ever reads and needs glasses. Nor does it apply to me, because I read in dim lights a lot and don't need glasses.
And yes, I did strain my eyes reading, but I got over it. I agree with you completely.
