Description
Do you often find yourself struggling to change your habits, regardless of how willing you are to set objectives? If you struggle reaching your (artistic) goals) the following might help.Goal setting involves the development of an action plan designed in order to motivate and guide a person or group toward a goal. Goals are more deliberate than desires and momentary intentions. Therefore, setting goals means that a person has committed thought, emotion, and behavior towards attaining the goal.
In 1960’s, Edwin Locke put forward the Goal-setting theory of motivation. This theory states that goal setting is essentially linked to task performance. It states that specific and challenging goals along with appropriate feedback contribute to higher and better task performance. In simple words, goals indicate and give direction to an a person about what needs to be done and how much efforts are required to be put in.
Effective goal-setting principles:
There are some areas to consider when using this framework:
- If goals are aggressive or promote intense competition then negative behaviour can arise
- Motivation is fragile, if you are too critical towards your art
- Some goals are a challenge to define, such as what is composition. In this case take a step by step approach with somebody who has an experience in the domain you want to develop
- If there is a competition between different types of motivation you need to clarify what is more important: such are you going to practice more or you are going to spend hours on Netflix or Facebook
The anticipated result of goal setting is:
- Self-Efficacy - This concern employee self-confidence in a performance task. Generally, self-efficacy leads to higher performance through increased effort.
- Goal Commitment - This assumes that individuals will become committed to the goal and be reluctant to leave it. This is true for goals that are openly communicated, self-set by the employee, and consistent with organizational goals.
Key points
- Locke’s goal-setting theory sets out five principles needed to create goals that inspire you
